Personally I prefer Black Sabbath but I do think that Hawkwind were a lot more creative and innovative than Sabbath. Both bands are incredible.

I wouldn't go that far. Black Sabbath did more to define a brand new genre of music.

But yeah, Hawkwind are certainly underrated as far as their influence goes, they have a lot of influence on prog, metal and punk bands alike.

Thats true Sabbath basically invented Heavy Metal in 1970. Im not putting down their influence. What I mean is that Hawkwind have a more experimental sound to their music whereas Black Sabbath are pretty much just Heavy Metal through & through. (if you know what i mean).

boo boo 04-23-2009 07:18 AM

Dude, in 1970 heavy metal WAS experimental.

Good point, I still find Hawkwind more interesting to listen to though.

Odyshape 04-25-2009 06:07 PM

So what kind of music genre does hawkwind fall under or what bands are they like? So far all i have heard is what they have influenced and something about spacerock. Also any links would be appreciated.

boo boo 04-26-2009 02:56 AM

Space rock is what they are generally called.

They're a mix of psychedelic prog and hard rock. They're a very special band in that they have a lot of influence on prog, punk and metal.

Not a lot of bands can lay claim to influencing bands as diverse as The Sex Pistols, Metalica, Kyuss, Porcupine Tree and Ozric Tentacles.

Sounds pretty sweet I'll check them out, also that chick in the band does have enormous breasts :)

I did not know that. Interesting.

lucifer_sam 04-29-2009 08:39 PM

yeah, lots of early hardcore punk bands modeled their bass after Lemmy's double stops. it's funny, i actually think Hawkwind had a much larger influence among non-progressive circles. Sex Pistols, Black Flag, Dead Kennedys, Kyuss & co., Suicidal Tendencies, the list goes on...

boo boo 04-29-2009 10:27 PM

They do have more influence on punk and metal, but they have influence on prog too and I still consider them a prog band rather than a punk or metal band.

I think the best term that can be used to describe Hawkwind is Prog N'Roll

Seriously that has to be the best term I've pulled completely out of my ass yet. :D

1. Lemmy.

Listen to the album Escalator by Sam Gopal (1968), on which he does the vocals. It's Hawkwind. Now listen to Hawkwind's first album. It's not really Hawkwind, is it?

2. Dik Mik and his tone generators.

3. Michael Mor****.

4 and 5. Stacia.

:o)

I'm a HUGE Hawkwind fan. Recently I just replaced my entire collection of CDs with the new remastered Atomhenge releases. A much better sound.

Honza 01-16-2014 06:57 AM

Oh and I had to look up Stacia on Google Images. I see what you mean, yes!

Goofle 01-16-2014 07:02 AM

Always been a Hawkwind fan but I am gonna have to throw on some of these old ass manky looking records my Dad gave me.

Your Dad was into Hawkwind? That is cool.

An hour-long BBC documentary featuring Hawkwind, with plenty of humorous "Spinal Tap" type moments throughout...

So, like, is Warrior on the Edge of Time really considered the weakest album of their "classic" period? It's clearly the album where they perfectly focused their unfocused focus into focused unfocusness in a way that they never quite had before. It was basically the culmination of everything they had been working up to ever since their debut.

Frownland 12-23-2015 01:20 PM

In Search of Space>>>

Although I haven't listened to either of them in a few years.

Anteater 12-27-2015 09:54 PM

Hawkwind are a bit of a daunting band to get into, but they're well worth the exploration. Hall Of The Mountain Grill remains my favorite of their 70's recordings, but they are also one of those bands that got pretty interesting well into the 90's. Hell, I'd say their 1990 outing Space Bandits is probably my favorite of all their LPs from start to finish.

You forgot "Magnu".

gypsy rider 05-28-2017 06:53 AM

Ha ha, I forgot a few others such as:
Space Is Deep
We Took the Wrong Step Years Ago

vambo 07-26-2017 10:24 AM

My fav Hawkwind track is "7 X 7" off "Space Ritual" (which is the greatest live heavy lp ,set or otherwise, made.)

However much I love this band, it must be said that it is simple music.

That is why there are many, many Hawkwind-clone bands, but near zero early King Crimson-clones.

The Batlord 07-26-2017 10:34 AM

Cause it heavy and make ground go wub wub wub.

vambo 07-27-2017 12:44 PM

Hawkwind quizzer:

the 70s movie where "You Shouldn't Do That" is playing and a square enters the room and asks what that racket is.

vambo 08-02-2017 07:57 AM

Okay. That went down well.

......

"Silver Machine pisses over anything Black Sabbath ever did"

WRONG.

But did you know that JAMES LAST covered "Silver Machine"?

I say that Hawkwind were *very* uneven. A few of their songs (e.g. Silver Machine, Lord of Light, Spirit of the Age) were great, some were meh and many were just boring masses of noise.

suitkees 07-30-2024 12:19 AM

Uneven they are, but there are some great albums. My favourites are Hall of the Mountain Grill and Warrior on the Edge of Time. Quark, Strangeness and Charm and Levitation are also pleasant listens and some of their latest albums are quite enjoyable too.
