Default The Genesis 2018 Discussion Thread

Sure, there's probably been one made before, but I'll be damned if I'm going to heave myself up out of my comfy chair and go searching for it. If there is one, and any mod wishes to merge this with it, knock yourself out.

Any further discussion which was to take place about Genesis in the "Release Me" thread should be brought here. Anyone else who just wants to talk about the band, this is where to do it.

Their worst two records were their debut and finale.

I would almost agree with this. Calling All Stations sucked pretty bad, especially the last section where they just seemed to say "Ah **** it we're gonna break up anyway let's **** off down the pub". The opener is good, "Shipwrecked", "Alien Afternoon", "Not About Us", but little more than that. You know my feelings on Abacab, and I don't have a lot good to say about Invisible Touch either, despite what Anteater and/or Patrick Bateman have to say about it. We Can't Dance I feel has more of a sort of proggy edge to some of the songs, and IMO "Fading Lights" would have been the perfect swansong, but there you go.

I'm definitely more in the 70s camp though, not just Gabriel but pretty much anything with Hackett on board.

I kind of find it odd that Ant got into Genesis around 1980 (same as me) but through Duke, whereas I got into them via the Seconds Out live album and then went backwards to get all the stuff that was on that - Trick of the Tail, Lamb, Nursery Cryme, Foxtrot, Selling England etc. So we both got into them at around the same time, but he went forward and I went backwards (first anyway).

My favorite Genesis album is Trespass. Duke is my 2nd favorite. I just like quoting American Psycho whenever people bring up Collins because it's fun.

I've already stated my top albums in other threads, but yeah, Trespass is very high on that list. Duke, too.

100% agree. Both Wuthering and Trick of the Tail are great because of Hackett's presence. When he left he took the band's balls with him.
