Shawn Lane

FF to 1:45 to avoid the annoying DJ? Club Owner? WGAF!

Wondering what you think Frown.

Shawn Lane, Jonas Hellborg & Jeff Sipe = What most Fusion fans would now label as a Supergroup.

Love everything they ever did but Personae, Time Is The Enemy & Temporal Analogues Of Paradise are some of my favourite records of all time.

Rip Lane.

Some great music but a terrible, terrible recording.

True story: First exposure to Lane was listening to this while driving. Rice with the Angels solo happens and I had to pull over because I was hyperventilating.

Solo starts at 0:30

I ran a Shawn Lane tribute forum for about 8 years. I've spoken with his mom, daughter, and his best friend (a few dozen times). Shawn was the very definition of a savant. Never drove a car, couldn't balance a checkbook, and lived most of his adult life with his grandmother.

Yet the guy could beautifully meld Hendrix, Coltrane, and Ali Khan, all while going 200 MPH.

Shawn test driving a strat:

Watched about 10 minutes (after skipping the DJ). Kind of my same thoughts on Lane as usual: fine playing but the overall package doesn't do anything for me. There are moments where the drummer will do fills and they start to touch on something great before becoming more grounded to its detriment. I thought that the bassist could've been replaced with someone who's just as fast but also interesting. Let me know if that video evolves in a big way, but I'm still lukewarm on Lane.

Do you see a big separation between him and Holdsworth?

Chula Vista 01-20-2018 10:34 AM

Shawn was the reincarnate of the Dasa's.

He was treated like a God when they toured India.

Well Holdsworth does have some of the same pitfalls in his solo work but it's a little less direct. I've never heard Lane in a context like Bundles where it's more...democratic amongst the musicians. I see what you mean though.

I'm guessing that Holdsworth was also a big figure for Lane.

When Lane started out his goal was to blend Holdsworth, DiMeola, McLaughlin, and Steve Morse.

Holdsworth was devastated when Shawn passed and even signed up to my forum to post his condolences.

You are simply the most pretentious snot I've ever encountered in my soon to be 58 years.

But he's not worthy of Frowny so all's for naught.

I really don't see anything wrong with what I said. His playing is simply dull in the part of that video that I watched. Don't ask for my opinions if you're just going to get pissy when I'm honest with you.

That escalated quickly

"His playing is simply dull".

Says the guy who publishes minutes upon minutes of random noises and then declares them as "music".

Here I go again......

Are you asking me to lie to you? Because this is genuinely how I felt about his playing in that particular video. He's hella skilled, but all of the stuff that he played--especially the solo--just had me waiting for it to end as it felt pointlessly modal. How do you feel about the music? Let's actually discuss music instead of this stupid feud.

You seem like the kind of guy who'd sentence someone to burn at the stake for burping at church back in the day.

Have you ever noticed that other people on here trash people’s opinions without trashing the person? Take Shizam and me. For whatever reason I tend to hate **** he loves but we discuss the music not each other.

Frown and I could compare Holdsworth and Lane with the merits and drawbacks of each and you know have a discussion.

He likes Waits. I don’t. He doesn’t call me pathetic over it. He explains why he thinks my OPINION is off. Just sayin

Well, being a guitarist who likes to burn, I'm a bit partial. I LOVE the music. Love the fact that those 3 guys would go out and mostly improvise and feed off of each other. Temporal Analogues of Paradise was completely improvised and it's maybe my favorite fusion album of all time.

I've already commented on Lane's solos, which blend jazz, rock, fusion, neo-classical, blues, west-Indian, and the kitchen sink. But his "made up on the spot" double stops and triads during those first 10 minutes is mind blowing.

Bachelor Chula really wants to grow. Appreciate and totally get what you're saying. I'm going to put in the effort.

Frown, sorry for the diss. Totally unwarranted.

And now Holdsworth himself has past.

Rip two legends.

At least Al Di Meola, Steve Morse and John McLaughlin are still kickin.
