All sounds the same

I love this genre. It's fast paced and catchy. Shure, the lyrics are mostly bad, but that's okay, the genre is awesome. The one thing that bothers me is that when my MP3 is on random and it goes from punk song to punk song I just can't tell the difference btw most of the bands because it just all sounds too much the same. The singing style, the instrumentation, etc. . . How could the punk scene reinvent itself, has it all run out of ideas?

Uh, maybe you shoud look harder. No Cash sound nothing like Against Me!

A_Perfect_Sonnet 04-02-2006 11:55 PM

And Social D are nothing like Strike Anywhere are nothing like Converge are nothing like Rise Against.

It ran out of ideas in the early 1980's.

Every band should listen to "The Shape of Punk To Come" and learn something

ryan123 04-03-2006 01:47 PM

its probably cos you've only listened to the albums once or twice. you need a good few listens before you notice distinct styles in a bands sound that become instantly recognisable

GI germs 04-04-2006 03:54 PM

yep. even with older punk bands they don't sound a whole lot alike. anyone who confuses the clash with dead kennedys is insane. insane i tell you!

Punk ran out of ideas, and was forced to evolve. First into post-punk, then post-punk evolved into alternative rock. Enter Husker Du and the Minutemen.

Sebster17 has got a point, I'm afraid. Compared to many other genres, its probably fair to say that punk does sound 'too much the same' or rather, the music stylings and the tones of the individual instruments and the selection of instruments used varies very little between different bands within the punk genre. Almost all of the bands comprise of drum-kit, clean bass (occasionally distorted, but usually clean), one or two guitars (distorted for most songs and played with either chugging chord/power-chords or mini-arpeggios or simple solos) and a singer or a couple of singers, singing at the high end of their normal, non-falsetto range. In terms of arrangements this is very samey, compared to most other genres.

There are differences between each band and most of the songs do sound different to an extent, but the differences only tend to exist within the already established confines of the genre. Yes, this is why its called a 'genre' and probably if many changes occured the music would fall into a different genre, but the music still does sound more samey than a lot of other genres.

(I'm not including Ska-punk in this though!)

Well said, Don't Run Me Over. You could cut most of that and paste it in the rap forum, as well.

Hey you. How about you go and listen to The Cramps then listen to The Pop Group then listen to Black Flag then listen to Suicide. Feel free to hear how wrong you are.

well, you could really make the same argument for every gnere out there. thats why music is confined to a certain genre, because they all have similar qualities that make them the same. my thoughts are that you're probably listening to too narrow a selection of punk, because punk itself is quite a diverse genre, i mean all the rediculousl amounts of subgenres should be enough to tell you that.
