PaperHurricanesAndPlanes 03-16-2007 07:06 PM

Lol. Bad Religion and Rise Against disagree. And, going mainstream is like going Black...you don't go back.

Wait for it, wait. Now. DIY.

punk-4-life 03-16-2007 10:54 PM

in my oppinion punk going "mainstream" is a good thing (as long as the bands dont sell out ) because real punk has a message and the more people hear the message the more impact it will have....

PaperHurricanesAndPlanes 03-16-2007 11:21 PM

^ The guy who can't spell for has a good point.

I doubt you'd say that if you were in a band and had to wash dishes or work in McDonald's just to pay for rent and rehearsal time so you could do a band in the first place.

PaperHurricanesAndPlanes 03-17-2007 08:59 AM

What I think he meant was, it shouldn't give you limos and big houses, but they should be able to live off it.

Despite the whole going mainstream or whatever, I still enjoy to vitalize bad religion every once in a while, especially the Empire Strikes First. Plus I gained a lot of respect for the band, or at least Graffin, when I read an article about him about The New Atheism, he didn't come of like the typical over-exposed punk-rocker, which I found nice.

Ultimately I feel going "mainstream" is a case-by-case basis, usually in favor of the negative side though.

KRUGER 03-30-2007 12:07 PM

imo, people who speak ill of going mainstream prolly only listen to mainstream bands; and are now of the thought they know what's up. i listen to underground music basically my whole life; you know. bands w/ not much more than just a few 7"s out, and i could care less about any other band that has gone mainstream. i think having threads like this are self-defeating. who cares about mainstream or not. listen or don't. turn off the radio and mtv and the mainstream will fall off.

mypiracy 03-30-2007 01:13 PM

punk should never have been mainstream

rockerchik 04-04-2007 12:25 PM

True punk is never mainstream but pop punk is...

Zombie_Fetish 04-05-2007 11:00 AM

Just about every single band from the first wave of punk who were all signed to major labels and regually had chart hits.

Zombie_Fetish 04-09-2007 11:10 AM

like who? you didnt name off a single band

Rainard Jalen 04-09-2007 11:44 AM

Even pop-punk isn't main stream, if you're talking the POP charts. That's the real meaning of mainstream. Something that has a chance in hell of winning a grammy. Anything else is not really mainstream. Profitable maybe, but not mainstream. There's very little punk music doing particularly well in the mainstream popular music charts. Fact.

Ha! I'm having more or less the same debate as this, only in the Ramones/Pistols thread. :)

*goes to post in the unpopular music opinions thread

Haha.
main·stream /ˈmeɪnˌstrim/ [meyn-streem] Pronunciation Key - Show IPA Pronunciation
–noun 1. the principal or dominant course, tendency, or trend: the mainstream of American culture.
2. a river having tributaries.
–adjective 3. belonging to or characteristic of a principal, dominant, or widely accepted group, movement, style, etc.: mainstream Republicans; a mainstream artist.
4. of, pertaining to, or characteristic of jazz falling historically between Dixieland and modern jazz; specifically, swing music. Compare traditional (def. 4).
–verb (used with object) 5. to send into the mainstream; cause to join the main force, group, etc.: to mainstream young people into the labor force.
6. to place (handicapped students) in regular school classes.
–verb (used without object) 7. to join or be placed in the mainstream.

Hmm. Now
Punk Rock is an anti-establishment music movement that began about 1976 (although precursors can be found several years earlier), exemplified by The Ramones, the Sex Pistols, The Clash and The Damned. The term is also used to describe subsequent music scenes that share key characteristics with those first-generation "punks". The term is sometimes also applied to the fashions or the irreverent "DIY" ("do it yourself") attitude associated with this musical movement.

So basically for Punk to be "mainstream" they couldn't be anti-establishment which means that by definition they couldn't have been Punk in the first place. Therefore "mainstream Punk" is not even Punk.

Make sense?

Shall I assist?:)

sleepy jack 04-15-2007 05:47 PM

Yes, bring a grappling hook, dark clothes and a baseball bat. We also need a get away car.

Sickpuppy 04-15-2007 05:50 PM

We might need some surgical scissors and a blender/food carburetor.
Don't ya think so?

sleepy jack 04-15-2007 05:53 PM

Possibly, if we an escape van we might be able to fit a tree chipper thing in the back that could come in handy. Its like the hardcore version of a blender.

Sickpuppy 04-16-2007 06:12 PM

I agree.
I think that would come completely in handy.
When shall we meet?
Haha.
Whose driving?
