Emo - Emotional or emotive hardcore. I think that originally, bands could be both punk, emo and hardcore all at once but for me personally it stemmed from hardcore bands introducing softer, more emotional songs on their albums. I think Hüsker Dü are a prime example in the 80's - a pure hardcore / speedcore band in the early 80's yet when you listen to certain tracks on Zen Arcade or Flip Your Wig there is a real sense of pure beauty and emotional (softer / personal) feeling in some of the individual songs.

In the 90's I would class bands like Farside as being the same.

Emo should be a reflection on the diversity in punk and hardcore music. Unfortunately I don't see that level of diversity in bands such as MCR and Panic!

...You know what real emo is but you still consider MCR and Panic emo?

Mr Nic 06-07-2007 07:04 AM

No - I definately don't consider MCR and Panic! to be real emo. Unfortunately when emo is mentioned as a genre nowadays the inevitable comparisons are made to bands such as the above. Fine if it's your thing but if you're into faux pop-punk then don't be ashamed - but don't call it emo.
