minor threat sXe
me and my friend were having a little argument on whether or not minor threat is classified as a straight edge band. He said the they werent because they only have like 4-5 staight edge songs. I said that they were because they pretty started s.e. and refer to them self in interviews as a straight edge band. Whats your guys opinions.

They are Straight Edge.
Minor Threat is not a straight-edge band. Ian has said himself that he never intended to start an entire scene; he was just expressing his personal choice. As far as I know, Ian is the only straight-edge member of the band.
According to their own record label (Dischord) they were but the band seemed to grow away from Ian's ideals. It is certainly true that he did'nt want to start a scene though.

Considering that some of the members in Minor Threat became a sleaze rock band called Junkyard in the late 80s I think the answer to that would be no.

I hate the label and the RULES it enforces.
To me, Minor Threat are about being in control of your life, Ian said himself it's not about a set of rules, which is definitely what it is about today. |
sxe sucks, but minor threats good, I dont do drugs anymore, but I still smoke, oh well, please don't tell me what to do.
^ lol
minor threats not sxe.
When I see "sXe" the first thing I think is "Sexy"!
Yes because Ian did promote the sXe movement. But sXe does suck. Drink beer and smoke weed kids :D
Minor Threat not only is/was straightedge. The term straight edge comes from the song "Straight Edge" by Minor Threat. Its just that MT was Straight Edge before Straight Edge became so Ppreachy and annoying. I think Ian Mckay later went on tyo be a coke head after fugazi got popular, at least that's the rumor
Part of the reason Minor Threat split up was because McKay is a preachy mofo, I mean, he defends himself by saying it's not supposed to be a set of rules it's supposed to be about being in control or whatever but he'd still freak out if anyone else in the band wanted to do anything other than drink. So, they rejected the scene, but McKay did start it, whether he likes it or not.

I heard that the whole sXe thing was modeled after Jeff Nelson, the drummer....
You heard wrong
I found where I read that. Not exactly that Jeff Nelson started it but more or less coined the term within the band.

No straight edge doesn't refer to a ruler -- straight, as in not ****ed up, edge, as in better than you. Ian McKaye came up with it and Jeff Nelson thought it was too preachy and they got into lots of fights. For example, in "Out of Step" the lyrics are something like "don't smoke/don't drink/don't ****" and Jeff forced Ian to put the implied "I" in the liner notes.

Poison Idea showed exactly what they thought of Ian MacKaye on the cover of their Ian MacKaye EP
