Sgt Pilcher 06-17-2010 03:48 PM

One of the only proto punk bands I never got into. The whole dual guitar thing is pretty cool, but other than that they just strike me as being really pretentious.

Imho Verlaine is a bit of a twat, but in the right mood they can be real nice to listen to. Just bear that about Verlaine in mind haha

I've never been a big fan of people calling well-composed music "pretentious." Just because someone puts work into an art form doesn't mean it's pretentious. Now, if you're referring to Verlaine as a person being like that, then maybe he was, but the music is not. Sometimes music can be pedantic which can get annoying, but Television is not pedantic.

Incredible album, and "Adventure" is excellent in its own right.

If I had to pick a favorite Television song, it would be "The Dream's Dream" rather than anything off MM.

I remember the thing that struck me most about them was how upon first hearing the guitar work, it sounded so impressive and complex. When I thought further about the solos, and in particular the one from the title track, it struck me that it's actually (almost) just going up and down a natural minor scale! Taken out of the song, it's entirely unremarkable, and that's where the genius of this album lies - by combining otherwise simple elements they produced something that sounds so wonderfully rich and complex.

Favourite songs from the album:

Venus, Marquee Moon, Elevation

What are other people's?

I only listen to those 3 songs.

You suck then.
The album can only be truly apppreciated if you listen to it all.
Torn Curtain is just as great as the other tracks.

Wow! That sounds so strange! I take it you've bought a record pllayer for the first time after growing up with C.d's and digital. Just sounds so bizarre for somone my age!

I also took a bus to school instead of walking up hill both ways and had a calculator instead of an abacus.

I saw earlier about discussions about people admiring the album more than they enjoy it. I was like that for a time, but as I listened to it it grew on me. It really is a great album, and Adventure great, too. "The Dream's Dream" is strange but wonderful song from it. Hell... their album from 1992 was great also.
