Couple of punk Movies and my thoughts on them

The last few days ive been watching punk rock movies on youtube and google I would of posted links to let thoughs who want to watch them but i not allowed to post links yet sorry..

but any ways the first one i watched was called "Punk Attitude" which talk more about the attitude and no the music of punk about being punk from the 50's to now ....

the second is "Punk is Not Dead" which i thought was along a well informative movie but did make a few points that punk did not die but it did sellout
to corporate America and the whole.

But I thin both of these are good movies for though that want to learn the history of punk

BTown 08-01-2009 11:59 PM

I've seenn punk is not dead, a good movie, yes, but nothing I hadn't already seen in "American Hardcore"

alphacore 08-02-2009 10:43 PM

Good to Know now i dont need to watch that movie which i was going too..

TumorAttitude 08-04-2009 10:06 PM

Potential stupid question, but what did you think of SLC Punk?
*curious*

No way dude I would definitely still watch American Hardcore, it covers a lot more stuff, I was just saying Punk's not Dead didn't say anything American hardcore had already showed me, still though American Hardcore covers even more.

How is 24 Hour Party People by the way? I've heard it was good haven't gotten the chance to see it.

I personally thought it was a bunch of commercialized garbage.

The original Suburbia has to be the best punk movie of all time, and as far as documentaries go, not much beats Decline of the Western Civilization Part. I.

I didn't think it had much of a point either.

American Hardcore is mediocre. Doesn't cover a lot of what it should have.

Grunge_Junkie 08-06-2009 11:22 AM

Did you see SLC Punk! or do you mean documentries?

Like what?

EDIT: I'm not saying you're wrong - just curious about which bands that you consider important and were neglected by the film.

It's pretty decent...mostly revolves around joy division, then happy mondays and tony wilson's the main character...a little self-indulgent considering he was a producer of the movie, but good all the same.

I really enjoyed it and would recommend checking it out.

The obvious Dead Kennedys and Misfits
Mostly everything from the South (MDC excluded from this for obvious reason)
Siege aren't even mentioned in the book let alone the movie
They interview Moby which was a good waste of time
etc

I see. Yeah, you're right about DK and Misfits. I thought Texas was covered pretty well but you're right about the rest of the South.
What I liked about the film is that it made me perk up and pay attention to some bands that I had written off as boring or otherwise irrelevant. Most notably, AH made me realize that I had neglected the Necros without good reason and it also made me appreciate DOA more than I ever had before. I think it's a pretty good document overall.

hiu 08-09-2009 11:54 PM

I don't recall anything on Texas, maybe there was been a while since I've watched it now but the only semi-Texas band I remember was MDC.

Basically this is a good movie for someone like you or a casual follower of the movement. For such a genre documentary I would have expected a more in depth view.

Engine 08-10-2009 12:02 PM

From TX they covered MDC, The Dicks, DRI and maybe another band.
Actually the 2 films (AH and Letts's) are kind of running together in my mind so maybe I'm confused.

Engine 08-28-2009 05:58 PM

I've been meaning to read the book - only seen the film. I've heard the book is more thorough

Can't stress that enough. They even have live footage of The Vandals, T.S.O.L., and I think D.I.

The absence of The Misfits and The Dead Kennedys from American Hardcore is inexcusable, by the way. They skipped possibly my two favorite hardcore bands that should never be overlooked.

Oh, and to live up to my avatar, Population: 1. It stars Tomata du Plenty (singer for the Screamers) and has several other punks including K.K. Barrett of the Screamers and Penelope Houston of the Avengers. As far as story line goes it's kind of stupid but I ****ing love the Screamers and I don't have too many opportunities to hear any of them play music. Plus, you get to see what Beck looked like when he was 12 years old.

Will you stop trolling the forum just to raise your post count? The last time I checked that results in a perma-ban...

Are you talking to me? I found this conversation and thought it was interesting... and I like the Screamers a lot so I thought I would contribute to the conversation... Sorry?

Seragon Ripper 09-07-2009 08:10 PM

I would venture to guess that either she's not talkng to you or some psychoactive medication is in order.

I read the book earlier this year. It reads like Wikipedia. If you're really into facts, and making artist connections, then it's a fun read. But if you're looking for a cohesive story from cover to cover, that's not its strong point.

The Misfits are covered well in the book, in fact they get their own section, as do Dead Kennedys.

I haven't seen the movie, but just in case they didn't explain why Moby is interviewed, in the book they briefly mention Vatican Commandos 7" EP Pregnant Nun, on which Moby played guitar.

That sounds pretty good to me. I like encyclopedic facts. Anyway, a cohesive story that attempts to connect all American Hardcore would be pretty forced.

In the film there is quite a bit of Moby-bashing for his description of himself as a member of Flipper.

Then it sounds right up your alley.

I'm sad to hear that. I've listened to the Vatican Commandos 7", and it's quality. Just because someone defected from the genre doesn't mean they contributed nothing to it.

Decline of Western Civilization is a must see, and the always enjoyable "Suburbia" with DI and TSOL...it's great...Flea from RHCP is in it.

I agree on both accounts. There is a youtube playlist out there where you can watch Suburbia.
