You're absolutely right...back then people actually listened to the bands they promoted on their t-shirts & jackets. They/we weren't concerned with trying to be ironic or hip like today's kids.

Who cares about technical talent. The best bass player in the world may be a guy playing open E 700x because that's what fits best with the band. It's not about playing difficult licks or technical proficient runs, it's about expressing your thoughts and ideas through music.

And if the Misfits did that with 2 chords and a crappy melody, then so be it.
