What's a matter guys??? no love for the badass Bizkit!!! Should I be offended??? :p:

Yes it was a gag, I just couldn't resist, so you can be rest assured knowing that the Biz is not number 1, nor number anything...thankfully.

I'll post band number one tonight with some parting thoughts. I've picked a band that is fairly conservative that people can't mumble about. They were a gigantic commercial success, so if you think about that it's not to hard to figure it out...keep it to yourself though.

William_the_Bloody 05-16-2013 08:53 PM

1. Nirvana ,Genre (Grunge/Hardcore/alternative rock) Washington State, USA era, 90's

They called it Grunge, and while this may have been a fitting label for bands like Soundgarden or Pearl Jam, it never really fit for Nirvana. Their breakthrough album Nevermind is simply a hardcore album filled with slower sludgy alternative ballads, and Nirvana themselves came up through the ranks of the hardcore circuit, via playing with bands like D.O.A. & Poison Idea.

They are also a band that came about just at the right time, when people were tired of glam rock, and 80's hardcore was becoming ripe for the mainstream. As a result, they achieved what neither the Sex Pistols, nor any other major label pop punk or hardcore act has been able to obtain since...one of the highest selling records of all time!!! RIP Kurt Cobain.

Smells like Teen Spirit

Come as you are

Parting Thoughts:

While it would be pointless to do another countdown, I would like to come back in the fall when it's cold & rainy to revise the list & make it longer by..

1) adding more modern bands, overall it's a pretty old school list, and admitably I haven't hit the indie labels lately

2) add more international bands, South America, Asia ect.

3) add your input. It was never meant to be a one man list, and I am just no good with some genres, so far your list away.

Finally, the countdown was just for fun, but if I lowballed or exempted your favourite band please let me know where you want them. I'd like to thank all the mods for letting me keep the thread going over the months, and in the meantime I will be surfing the indie labels, sifting through all the crappy punk and hardcore, to bring you just the good stuff, cheers WTB.

BastardofYoung 05-16-2013 10:00 PM

least you could do is get Kurt's name right :P

William_the_Bloody 05-16-2013 10:13 PM

fixed it...twice lol

BastardofYoung 05-16-2013 10:16 PM

But this was interesting to say the least. I am almost tempted to do something similar, but with extreme metal.

William_the_Bloody 05-16-2013 10:48 PM

Hmmm, well I guess one of my regrets is that I didn't include enough heavy bands, but go for it if you like, I should forewarn you though that it is more work than I bargained for, and you'll find at the end of the day, your still disatisfied.

No...one list is good enough to last me a lifetime, I wouldn't want to do another.

No Territorial Pissings the only real punk rock song on that album. :soapbox:
I don't understand the Nirvana nod, but the thread has been a good read and polarizing to say the least.

Well Fred, if you have any recomendations let me know, I'm going to revamp the list in the fall, as I don't feel I finished the job I set out to do, which was to make a good comprehensive list of hardcore/punk bands.

Basically I didn't start checking out the indie labels until mid stream, and as a result, I ended up compiling a long list of bands that were too late to fit on the list. I also didn't do a very good job of capturing the harder end of the genre by today's standards, too many old school bands.

As for polarizing, the countdown was just for fun, I didn't actually think anyone would follow along, so Nirvana was an easy way to avoid mumbling when I noticed the view count was spiking.

I just went with my ear, if I didn't, most of the metalcore & melodic hardcore bands would have been eradicated from the list. You would be surprised at how much I held my nose, it was not my personal top 10.

I thought it was alot of fun to read WTB. I'd say its been a fun read and the feedback from other users made it interactive enough to avoid being stale. Gonna be interesting to read Bastards Metal thread and i'm looking forward to that along with your revamped thread. Kudos my friend.

I love Nirvana at #1.

I know they aren't as punk as most would expect from this list, but they definitely are a hardcore band at heart. Everything Kurt wrote was punk, but the production was just so pop that we never think of them as a punk band.

I'm totally cool with this.

Scotty The Rebel 05-17-2013 06:48 PM

Still trying to figure out why Billy Idol and/or Generation X weren't on the list. But it wasn't my list so, eh.

I loved the list! This has easily been one of my favorite threads of the year. I may not have agreed with every pick, but that's to be expected, it's not my list after all. And even though I teased you a little about the Nirvana pick, the fact is that you demonstrated so much knowledge throughout the thread that I have nothing but respect for your opinions. :)

Same here. And I actually thought Nirvana at #1 was a cool choice. Different and ballsy. Personally I think they're ace and better than 95% of punk/hardcore bands.

Newkie 05-18-2013 12:43 PM

An interesting end to a good thread, good work William. I have to admit I thought you were just going to leave it with Limp, still not sure I'd put Nirvana in with hardcore but you have to have your own twist in your own thread. Other than your dislike of Fugazi and your liking of metalcore, a generally agreeable list :D

bob. 05-19-2013 12:48 AM

in all honesty i thought Nirvana would be on here after you listed Jesus Lizard....but i have to admit i was not thinking the number one spot.....and you really threw me of when you said "a conservative band"

personally i love Nirvana....i just don't consider them a punk band....but thats the fun of it right? it's all subjective :)

a great thread that i am truly sad to see over

William_the_Bloody 05-20-2013 09:36 PM

Thanks guys, I'll still be kicking around, a little less in the summer though, cheers.

Yeah, man, post around the forums more! You already have a bunch of built-in fans from this thread. :)

Good work, William, I approve. I laughed at Bizkit. :p:

William_the_Bloody 07-24-2013 11:02 PM

So the revamp is complete.

I was going to do it in the fall but I discovered that I could just add things via the edit button. It should be noted that I didn't change anything that would affect someon's comments. That would be uncool.

All I did was add bands to each entry from numbers 140 down to 21, and then some celtic bands underneath the Dropkick Murphys.

I tried to add bands that other people mentioned along the way, so I can't vouch for the quality of all the songs, it's easy to pick good songs when you're familiar with a band, not so, if you're not.

If your favourite bands not on there, all I can say is that the list was never meant to be a discography. If you've been following my editing you might want to go through things again though, as I replaced some bands & added new stuff.

Anyhow, time for me to close the coffin door on punk, and fly off into the sunset, cheers.
