Punk sucks says Iron Maiden singer
|
Who could ever have imagined that such an annoyingly bombastic singer might also be a bit of a blowhard?
|
I mean that was kind of the point of punk in the beginning, right? We can't really play but we've got something to say?
|
so why is this relevant? |

It's also not always true. There are some outstanding musicians playing punk.
|
|
i9 don't know...personally i think Crass's first album is much better than anything Iron maiden ever did...musically speaking...simply for the fact that they really had know idea what they were doing but actually created a wonderful cacophony
have you ever seen Heavy Metal Parking Lot? ^proof |
Bruce can say what he wants, he's in ****ing Iron Maiden. Besides, we didn't really see his interview, just a few lines in an article by somebody who sounds like they don't really like metal very much.

2014 and people still don't get punk. ****, it barely gets any mainstream coverage anymore. And at this point the whole pseudo philosophical angle has pretty much been squeezed out anyways. Why the hell would anyone make music out of jealousy over their supposed inability to make music? What planet is this guy living on?
|
He probably said that because he saw this.

Metal was much more "established" especially in the 80s, at a time when Hardcore Punk was only college radio and released on independent labels. Heavy Metal was very mainstream, bands were on major record labels, they were played on commercial radio and on MTV. Well of course not every single Metal band but at least they were represented on those mediums, much more than Punk ever was. |
i know I sure wish I could play like Bruce and be idolized by junior high school kids

But he forgets that Metal was embraced by mainstream media, so what's his point? |
Quote:
Secondly, again, aside from a very few bands metal was by and large completely under the radar. You can't just say "heavy metal was on commercial radio and MTV", cause you're talking about a genre of heavy metal that was divorced, in its fans, in its artists, in its sound, from just about any other part of metal. |
I knew this was going to pop up on music banter It is from an interview he did for the Guardian newspaper in England. Here is the original link.
Iron Maiden: 'Fame is the excrement of creativity' | Music | The Guardian Quote:
For all intents and purposes metal had become much more established in the mainstream. If you were a NWOHM, thrash or glam metal band you got signed to a major label. If you were the Dead Kennedys, the Circle Jerks, Conflict or Discharge singing about politics, your music career was doomed to the indie labels. Quote:
Obviously in Dickinson's world punk rock must boil down to the Damned & bands like Peter & the Test Tube Babies, because to my knowledge Joe Strummer's wasn't musically motivated by snorting coke and shagging birds. What this boils down as it often does with the NWOHM artists is that they resented having their music sidelined in the late 70's by the punk explosion in England. I've heard other bands like Def Leppard make similar comments on punk. The thrash bands and glam bands like Motley Crue who would have their sound directly influenced by punk normally praise the scene, so not surprisingly I would rather listen these bands than Iron Maiden any day |
Between your blog, the 80's survivor thread, and posts like this you've become one of my favorite posters. Super cereal.

I didn't read the article, or much of anything that's been said here.
But I like Iron Maiden, Bruce Dickinson is a professional ****ing pilot which is cool as ****, and I think punk sucks too. Not all of it, but the music never jived with me. Also most of the people I've known who preferred it over other music genres really sucked as people. They got into the political views being expressed and glamorization of being a lawbreaking drug addict. Not sure which came first, the music or the personality, and dont care. I'm just ****ing ecstatic all those people left my friends' circle long ago to either die or join some commune in Indiana. A few changed. Most died or joined communes, never to simultaneously bum cigarettes I bought and sneer at having a job in the same breath, again. Straight up though, I tend not to like the vocals or waving sort of circular bouncy effect of the music. It's too hyper for me. |
He's upset because he has to work harder, and actually put some thought and talent into his music. Plus, Bruce is just old and bitter.

man i love this i saw Iron maiden a few years ago and this is exactly what it was like....the opening act was one of their daughters....Steve Harris's i think....and they booed her right off the stage |

I don't understand how he can say Punk musicians were laughing at 'the art establishment' when half of them came out of art schools in the first place.
Talent comes in many forms and what Punks lacked in technical prowess they made up for in passion, charisma, and invention. |

It was really the porn star comment that got me. With all the dumb ass comments coming from the likes of Bruce Dickinson, Dave Mustaine, and Ted Nugent, metal could really use a PR overhaul. |
Many Punk bands say Metal sucks too. If you prefer Punk you will agree. If you prefer Metal you will disagree. If you are open minded and like both then you shouldn't really give a crap as there are terrible bands in both genres.

Green Day says Hii ;)

uuuhm, does this guy even know what punk is?
Come on bruce..I expected better from you :/. Stop being such a Phil Fish. Listen to the paul D'Ianno Era Iron Maiden and tell me that there isn't a Punk Influence in there Bruce. Also, What's with all the punk hate in the commens of that article? edit: Okay, I just found out MetalInjection is making Bruce seem worse than he actually is after reading this comment ''What I mean is that Metal Injection takes select phrases from the actual interview and blows them up and adds sensationalist titles on their site. There is a link to the interview above (in case you can't find it: http://www.theguardian.com/mus... and it was about Bruce talking about the anti-establishment attitudes of punk bands to deny mainstream success. However, Metal Injection finds it funny to *paraphrase* the article, take it completely out of context, post it as an article and make Bruce look like a nitpicking twat.'' |
