What! you don't think Limp Bizkit is a punk band!?! :) Lol, Paul Seemus's reaction to that was classic, he bought it in full.
I do think Nirvana was from the punk tree though, they weren't raging Mohawk Exploited punk rock, but they were definitely rooted in American punk. Nevermind is a hardcore album plain and simple.
Allright well the dividing line is tricky, early U2 (War ect) is definitely alternative, they just happened to end up being the biggest band on the planet. Bands like the Police, and Duran Duran were pretty commercial from the get go so they're out. Blondie & the Talking Heads & all the initial New York bands would have to be in.
The initial Manchester bands like the Stone Roses, Happy Mondays would be in, but Brit pop like Oasis and Blur would be out. Portishead, Massive Attack, different genre, out.
There would be less new stuff this time round as I've hit the age where I really don't give a f)ck! I got into stuff like a Place to Bury Strangers a few years ago, but my Death Grips CD got used as highway frisbee about after one week or so.
