how would i know that's a joke when it has NOTHING to do with the comment you quoted that was referencing the song posted?


had you said something along the lines of "well Billy Joe's hair was blue and now it's green".....that would be a joke

I know I'm not the funniest guy on earth, in fact most of my attempts at humor tend to fall flat, but i thought the lol at the end was a pretty nice indication that it was a joke.

Here's your logic:

1. I like punk.
2. I don't like Green Day.
3. Therefore, Green Day isn't punk.

This is stupid. It's like me saying:

1. I like ska.
2. I hate No Doubt.
3. Therefore, No Doubt isn't ska.

Same basic principle, even same era, but if you told anyone that No Doubt aren't ska, you would be laughed at.



After the 80s, hardcore fell out of favor, and so bands like Green Day took cues from the Ramones and the Sex Pistols. Punk wasn't always fast tempos and shouted lyrics.

Also even if they aren't punk, Green Day are better songwriters than most punk bands.

Also all of Green Day's biggest hits are their most tame songs (of course). Even American Idiot is pretty wild when you look past the hits.

I've been relistening to their discography because of this thread, and Kerplunk is a really sweet album. It's got really **** production, but what do you expect from a punk band.

I agree entirely on your main point, just because you don't like it doesn't mean it's on that genre. But doesn't No Doubt have a ton of pop songs devoid of any Ska? I mean, later madness is similar in that regard, but still, I could see how people don't find No Doubt Ska as a lot of the most popular songs aren't ska in the slightest.

I think Reel Big Fish would fit your argument more. A lot of 1st/2nd wave ska fans hate on Third Wave Ska such as Reel Big Fish, but just because it sounds different and they hate it doesn't mean it's not Ska. That's no true scotsman ****.

And indeed, Green Day takes influence from Punk Rock, not Hardcore. It almost seems like some hardcore fans think more abrasive=better or something..
There's tons of softer punk tracks I find much more redeeming than a lot of really abrasive songs, and that's not because I dislike abrasiveness (in fact, I love it), it's that songwriting I dig goes first (tho, sometimes Timbre causes generic songwriting to still result in a standout track.)

3. Therefore, Pink Floyd isn't prog.

I really don't understand why this debate about Green Day even exists. It seems pretty simple. They started out as a pop punk band, and later went into alternative.
