Code Orange Kids

Spoiler for recommended listening:

Much like others, I found out about Code Orange Kids after they had released their second LP and shortened their name to Code Orange. For those familiar with their 2nd album, you should be well aware of their crunching metalcore riffs and sludgey production style that comes courtesy of Converge's Kurt Ballou.

Of course I said I would stay away from metalcore acts as much as possible, and that is why I'm going to focus on the band's debut release Love Is Love // Return to Dust.

There is certainly a distinct metalcore inspired approach throughout their debut, but it's much more subdued and makes way to quite a few post-hardcore moments which is quite unlike their sophomore record I Am King. While I Am King thrives off of the band's relentless chaos and ferocity, their debut allows for a lot more breathing room and artistic adventuring. What I'm trying to say is that this album has a lot more, as Batlord calls it, "indie ***gyness" than the follow-up does. The sludgy production is one definite carryover between their two releases however, as Kurt Ballou appears behind the boards on this one as well.

I would highly recommend both albums to anyone into hardcore or metalcore, although I do believe the debut offers much more of a return. Keep your eyes peeled for these guys in 2017 as well as they'll be dropping their 3rd full-length release Forever on January 13th.

You can find all of their material on spotify or you can download their discography for free over on Sophie's Floorboard.

Despite loving converge, something about most modern styled hardcore doesn't sit as well with me and I'm not sure what it is. It's louder, it's heavier, it's more distorted, but it doesn't impact me as much as a lot of older style hardcore does.

I like the first Code Orange album a lot but found the nonstop breakdown onslaught of their second album to be really monotonous. No dynamics whatsoever.

Essential 21st century hardcore that one of you fuckers recommended. I think it was Bat. Either way listen to it if you haven't. If the opening lyric to the opener doesn't grab you by the throat, I don't know how to help you.
