List artists known for something else who used to play or still play in punk bands

Zach de la rocha played drums in one, guitar in another, and was the frontman of Inside out. Not too surprised, honestly. Rage has always had a kind of punk anger to it (lyrically too), set to tom morello's groovy guitar riffs. His vocals are a lot more abrasive on inside out. And the band's also a lot more generic than rage.

People seem to usually be surprised Frank Turner was in a (post) hardcore band called million dead, but for me it was the other way around. You can occasionally hear his voice yell like he used to in his folk rock outputs, and get to hear and see references of him liking punk. Not only was he in million dead and did he have another hardcore band before that, he's also in the not so serious mongol horde now.

For a while, Flea played bass in hardcore/punk rock band FEAR. Quite a lot simpler than what he plays now im the peppers.

Anywho, list more

I had no idea that ever played with FEAR.

The rapper and producer POS has been in several punk bands.

Dylstew 06-21-2017 04:40 AM

I know it from a Dutch RCHP documentary. Here's the clip: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=YK8Q8awAjno

Ice T fronts a hip hop/crossover thrash hybrid called Body Count

Janszoon 06-21-2017 05:01 AM

I saw Body Count back in the day.

David Johansen

From what I can find Flea doesn't appear on any Fear records. He might be the most overrated musician ever.

He just played live for a period of time. Overrated, sure, but he seems like a nice guy with a sense of humor that is very competent at his instrument, and I can't fault him for that.

and Les Claypool

Flea is a better musician than those whackoffs but the praise he gets including Rolling Stone declaring Flea the second greatest bassist EVER.

Frownland 06-21-2017 08:26 AM

If Flea is better than Claypool, I've yet to see it. Claypool is definitely overrated as **** but at least he could back it up on some level, like Flea. I guess whay I'm saying is that I hate Victor Wooten.

OccultHawk 06-21-2017 08:44 AM

Roger That

A strain called "seeing through the gimmick."

Tbh I was wondering who MB's secret VW fan would be.

I've never actually heard a Victor Wooten album and I don't consider myself a fan. I just saw him with a few friends and the dude can play a f*cking bass man.

He doesn't have any soul and if you look past the tap gimmick, he's isn't even as impressive as any 19 year old you'll find in a standard jazz musician's Tuesday night backing band. Mother****er played NAMM a few times and everyone decided that he was the be-all-end-all of jazz bass when the dude does nothing that's impressive for more than five seconds. Dude might as well be Dragonforce.

Dylstew 06-21-2017 05:19 PM

Nice ones guys. Belinda one's surprising.

Jeff hanneman from slayer unsurprisingly had a short lived punk band, a track of which you can here on slayers hardcore cover/tribute album undisputed attitude.

Frownland 06-21-2017 05:21 PM

Political pundit Henry Rollins led a punk band for a while.

Dylstew 06-21-2017 05:24 PM

Lol

The Batlord 06-21-2017 05:30 PM

I hear that guy from PiL used to be in some punk band or other.

He couldn't be a nicer person. This has value. I enjoyed his performance. This was like nine years ago. Haven't listened to much since but YOU BE NICER.

Sorry to be jumping in on this late....just discovered the forum :)

Brandon is still (as an older adult) playing in Dr Know - just saw them last month in the UK

Dave Grohl was in the hardcore band Scream before Nirvana

MRoe 10-23-2017 05:59 PM

This may sound obscure, but David Johansen who has been in a bunch of movies and HBO's Oz was in the iconic punk band The New York Dolls

OccultHawk 10-24-2017 02:14 AM
