I've always found it ironic that people hail the accomplishments of Run-DMC and then lament the commercialization of hip-hop.

I love Run DMC, probably one of the greats of the game. Very nice and awesome group

I used to be know all the lyrics to their greatest hits album when I was something like 10 or 11 :\
I also think my favourite song was 'Down with the king'.

sh*t I remember when Raising Hell came out.
One minute all the 'older kids' were walking around in Iron Maiden shirts , the next they`re walking around in dayglo hoodies dragging around old bits of their mums lino & spinning around on it on their heads.

Thanks for posting everybody. I have both their Greatest Hits albums (1991 & 2003). From those albums I like the following songs. 'Down with the king', 'Can you rock it like this', 'King of rock', '(The 1984 Version of) It's like that', 'Rock box', 'Mary mary' and 'It's tricky'. Post titles of your favourite RUN-D.M.C songs.

Run DMC are legends, no doubt.

Can you imagine if a rapper did a song with Aerosmith today? He would get run out of town. I think a lot of the love Run DMC gets is due to nostalgia.

It’s sad that people dismiss the Beastie Boys as a gimmick act because they did so much more to further the “art” of hip-hop.

Yeah but at the time Aerosmith was hot,
and lets not forget Puffy did that song 'Come With Me' with some well known guitarist(I don't knowhis name),
Nelly just did a song with that Country singer,
Snoop, Xibit and others just did the video for one of Korns tracks,
Travis from the now defunct Blink 182 has collaborated quite a bit with Hip Hop Artists especially Rappers, Pharrell for one,
Limp Biscuit(sp?) have collaborated with Eminem(before the beef) and Method Man, and have a DJ(forget his name), and employ breakers(breakdancers) for their Videos and shows,
lets not forget Linkin Park doing an ALBUM/DVD with Jay-Z and actually melding Rock and Hip Hop together.

Those are the ones that come to mind at the moment but there are plenty more.
Now I'm not saying all those collaborations were a good idea, I'm just pointing out the fact that what RunDMC did was before it's time and that's why people love them,
They were one of the first to really realise the potential of Hip Hop on a GLOBAL and ECONOMIC scale as oppose to just having block parties and being happy with being signed and the possibility of MAYBE going gold,
Some may argue that that's what contributed to Hip Hop losing it's innocence but it could be argued that it's part of the reason why so many people from the Ghetto are able to hustle legally and bring wealth and positivity back to it's community,
Hip Hop feeds a hell of a lot of people right now, through fashion, films, books, dance and movement, jewellery, alcohol, fruit drinks/water, cars, food, visual art, music etc, etc.

And the Beastie Boys are dope, REAL Hip Hop, surely everyone knows that?

Musical collaborations typically come about for one of three reasons. First being an actual artistic connection between the parties involved (Em and Elton). Second is the attempt one artist to gain musical credibility through association (Puffy and Sting). Last is for the sole purpose of capitalizing on the almighty dollar (Run-DMC and Aerosmith).

I never fault anyone for trying to secure themselves financially. However as a fan of the “art” of hip-hop I can’t help but feel that Run-DMC inadvertently contributed to its downward spiral. That’s not to say that I don’t appreciate them or that I didn’t bang Run-DMC in my speaker box as a kid. It’s more an observation by a fan saddened by the current state of the industry. Just my 2 cents.
