He had no business competing. I think he was just looking to get his name out there again. I'm still a fan. Always will be.

I used to listen to him a long time ago, but eventually got bored and deleted all of his stuff because I got kind of sick of the fact he actually can't string together what he wants to say coherently.

He can put words together that sound decent, but ultimately, most of his stuff is about how smart he is and throwing in random sci-fi references or technobabble to try and back it up, and that isn't really what he ends up achieving. Compare what he's doing to someone like Deltron, who is a technically inferior rapper, but can take a theme and run with it as a concept that grows organically, and extends outwards, and in comparison, what Canibus does seems to be more akin to running in place.

Not to mention, the fact he's so desperate to use "intelligent" sounding phrases in his raps means you get a lot of **** like this, which flows but just makes no sense:

"Yo, Houston to Earth
Watch the ripper crucify you with verse
My urethra to ya uvula, quenches your thirst
Put your flames out with dry desert dirt where leopards lurk
Lock your soul down with an esoteric weapon search"

Does he want to make a religious or a biology reference here? How is a leopard relevant to this? What is an "Esoteric" weapon search?

"Strap a bomb to one of your labels record clerks
And activate it as soon as they get to work
Ring the alarm, red alert, nigga it gets worse
Bypass security networks with select words
Megahertz make nebulas reverse till your head burst"

OK, a cryptic reference to passwords I can live with, but that stuff about nebulas is just completely nonsensical. They have nothing to do with megahertz, reversing one wouldn't do ANYTHING for millions if not billions of years even if it did happen, and wouldn't affect anyone on earth, and certainly wouldn't make their head burst.

Now admittedly, thats taking things too literally and it doesn't matter too much, but this happens CONSTANTLY in Canibus' music and it ends up just making him look stupid.

I like the ambiguity. Being able to interpret the lyrics in your own way is what's fun about music.

If that qualifies as ambiguous, then I may as well suggest that a Markov bot becomes a hip hop producer. What he's said there has no unifying thread of any kind.

"Ambigous" revolves around having multiple possible literal or implicit meanings. What possible meaning can be construed from a verse where the content is "Quench your thirst with my urine, then suddenly somehow without explanation you are on fire and I will put out this unexplained instance of combustion using dirt from a nondescript area containing leopards, and subsequently I will restrain your non-corporeal essence with a weapon search only applicable to people with specialised knowledge"?

The only ambiguous part of that nonsensical mishmash of jargon is "Who is required to have the esoteric knowledge during this mysterious spiritual disarming? The person (or deity) doing the searching, or the recipient of this presumably unpleasant, but as mentioned, non-corporeal, interventionist inspection?"

You can find meaning in anything, you just have to look deep enough and be on somewhat of the same page as the person writing it. I don't think we need to break down and dissect every single lyric the dude has ever written, but there IS a meaning to them, even if an overall theme is missing from his songs. But that's what his style is and always has been. He's staying true to himself, and you can't knock him for that. He puts more thought and time into his lyrics than 99% of hip hop artists these days. But, since you refute my perceived value of his music and lyrics, I'll give you my take on the examples you gave.

Quote:

Yo, Houston to Earth
A reference to astronauts communicating with the NASA base in Houston, TX. Made famous on the Apollo 13 moon mission.

Quote:

Watch the ripper crucify you with verse
He call's himself "Rip The Jacker" and "Jack The Ripper." An homage to the serial killer, and a double-entendre for "ripping" or destroying his verses (a good thing in the context) and owning other rappers.

Quote:

My urethra to ya uvula, quenches your thirst
Eluding to his urethra (in his penis) quenching one's thirst (sticking it in their mouth). Oral sex is what he's talking about.

Quote:

Put your flames out with dry desert dirt where leopards lurk
"Put your flames out" is another way of saying he will extinguish your "fire" or your will. He plans on doing so by smothering the metaphorical "fire" with dry desert dirt. "Where the leopards lurk" is just a qualitative property he added to describe that desert from which he plans on getting that "dirt".

Quote:

Lock your soul down with an esoteric weapon search
He will "lock your soul down", or stop it from interacting and growing, meaning he will stop you from progressing as a human being. He will do so by performing an "esoteric weapons search." Meaning he will search you for esoteric or "hidden" weapons. Once you are relieved of said weapons, you will have no way to defend yourself from him "locking your soul down."

Quote:

Strap a bomb to one of your labels record clerks
And activate it as soon as they get to work
Ring the alarm, red alert, nigga it gets worse
Bypass security networks with select words
Pretty self evident here. The "select words" is referring to the passwords he will utilize to access and bypass the security system at your record label, which will then be blown up, leaving you sh*t outta luck.

Quote:

Megahertz make nebulas reverse till your head burst
"Megahertz" is a measurement of frequency, a very high frequency at that. Once our consciousness reaches a high enough awareness, our beings start to vibrate at higher frequencies. Once we do so, we cease to require physical forms, and our consciousness is reunited with where it originally came from, thus "reversing the nebula" is just a completion of the soul cycle. "Till your head bursts" is an elusion to no longer needing a physical form, and also a double-entendre for his music "blowing your mind."

That's my take anyways...
