i h8 when people call them rock, sure they did hardcore punk before rap but licensed to ill is almost completly made of samples (they are a couple songs without samples though). same with pauls boutigue, they are really rock influenced though. I love the beastie boys, they are one of my favorite bands, my favorite song is johnny ryall.

The Beastie Boys are excellent, Paul's Boutique is still the only Rap/Hip-Hop album to blow me away.

Agree to disagree

I don't know that I wouldn't allow them to fall under the "rock" umbrella, with their eclectic mix of music and extensive song list there's a mix of everything from Hardcore to jazz...an amazing band, I've seen them live plenty of times over the years and they always put on good show!

Their production is always top notch, and they're very fun.

The Beasties always surprised me. Even when I was a kid who "hated rap", I would still see the video for "Sabotage" and laugh my ass off. And it wasn't until I saw footage of them at Woodstock '94 or '99 that I realized they were actually playing that ****!

Their first album that I really got into was Ill Communication. Still my favorite. But I had no idea what to expect the first time I listened to The In Sound From Way Out!. From then on I gave them the respect they deserve.

Not to mention the fact that they started out as a few Jewish kids from NYC that wanted nothing more than to be the Bad Brains? What?

beastie boys gave me the impression that you don't have to always be booohooo serious with your music and still have the opportunity to be creative and still rock it out

lol did i just say booohooo to describe depressive lack of content lol

thanks

Beastie Boys was the first concert that I ever went too. They played a double bill with Helmet in 94 and was awesome!!

Recently giving The Sounds of Science a spin and many people seem to forget that most of their riffs and beats are created by them and not some studio trickery. The drum tracks are their own and although Licensed To Ill was damn terrible there is no doubting how good they are:

this is the one that got me into the B-Boys, and to me that's all they've ever been. they're not rap, rock, indie, or whatever, they're the Beastie Boys and that's that and that's what makes them excellent.

anyone who thinks they're just studio trickery needs to check out 'the in sound from way out' and ' the mix up'.

out of the half dozen discs i've got by them i'd say i've probably listened to 'hello nasty' the most.
