I'm going to use this thread to rant a bit.

I'm tired of everyone saying oh "hip hop is dead." screw you Nas....he has everyone repeating that crap not knowing anything about hip hop. the people that keep bringing up old school artists and saying that it's dead because that style isn't around anymore is totally off base.

hip hop is alive and well....just because you don't like the new direction hip hop is in right now doesn't mean it's dead.....it just evolved into what it is today, which is based off of what's going on in society today. the hip hop culture as a whole is constantly branching out throughout the world and opening up more people to it.

classic rock from the 70s sounds nothing like rock that comes out today so why would you expect hip hop to not change over the years and sound different?

I don't understand the emphasis put on hip hop having to be serious and political.

Your not supposed to take souljah boy serious, its just goofy pop music. Is it insightful? hell no, but its fun to listen to with a group of people.

I think what you are watching on tv isn't as accurate description of what people are listening to as it was in the 90's or beginning of the MTV generation. With the internet, file sharing etc people are listening to a hugely diverse amount of music.

At least we don't have rodney dangerfield and other celebrities making rap albums like they did previously, or, you know...

Default if you can do better, wheres your deal at?

I gotta laugh when people say things like 'new rap sucks'. Wheres your deal at? Where's your hit song? I don't think new rap is the best thing I've ever heard, but i think there are alot of things being done in current hip-hop/rap that has never been done. Things that weren't possible even 10 years ago. Your crazy kid...

The thing i hate about the whole rap and scene is the attitudes that come from it. I hate the little timbit gangster that are everywhere now. Like these kids come from normal famlies, well off famlies, yet they think they need to try and rob every other person.

To respond to DJ Chameleon: it's okay and understandable that hip-hop would change and veer off in new directions. I just don't happen to like most of the new music. If had branched out in a different way, and the rap I hear on the radio was more creative than what is being played, I wouldn't have a problem with it.
Here a few other reasons I dislike the 'new' rap:
Loud, obnoxious, (unlike old school, which actually had things to say)
style over substance (again, it all seems to be about bling, I'm not getting any meaningful messages from what's on the radio)

Obviously, you didn't get Nas' message that he was saying, not so much 'hip hop is dead,' but the spirit of hip hop is dead. In financial terms, hip-hop is more successful than ever, but Nas just feels a lot of the integrity has been taken out of it.

To respond to the latter part of your post, yes hip-hop is branching out and reaching other cultures. I hear this bada*ss hip hop station whenever I go to Las Cruces, NM, that plays all this Latino rap, which has really good beats and boasts very cognitive lyrics. You're right, that there is good stuff out there, and people need to look to find it. I just think that what they always play on the radio is such garbage, but obviously it's all attributed to what people like, and if everyone liked the same music, we wouldn't have this forum, because we get to share and also dispute what music is good, and what sucks. I think most of the people on this forum understand that what the mainstream likes sucks, and that's why the punk thread is always so popular on here. That said, I probably didn't even need to make this thread, but I had just gone to South Carolina, and there were these hip wanksters macked out like Lil Jon, and I just thought it was really sad.
