Antipop Consortium
Are an incredible hip-hop outfit who showcase not only fluid raps,
brilliant rhymes and impeccable delivery, but also production that defines any sort of categorization--elements of musique concrete, turntablism, trademark hip-hop, glitch, and subdued elements of noise and drone. Their last album before they disbanded in 2005 was a collaboration with Matthew Shipp, an avant-garde pianist in the vein of Cecil Taylor, so their music could just as easily go in the "experimental" thread. My personal favorite is Arrhythmia (which is in the shoutbox) which sounds like a mix of Aesop, RJD2 and Black Dice. |
Any band that you post about is always worth digestion. ;)
|
there are some odd cuts from APC that are just win.. Ghostlawns and Dead in Motion for example.
|
Arrythmia is a gem, although I don't find myself drawn to listen to it so often. My favourite song is We Kill Soapscum, the beat is hypnotic.
You also have to love the scat vocals at the end of Silver Heat. |
Three amazingly dope emcees who are far too often rapping over beats that don't deserve their attention... Beans has probably had the best solo album, but M. Sayyid and High Priest are by far my favorites. M. Sayyid killed it on the Mumia 911 project.

Damn fine rap act. Shopping Carts Crashing is the only album I've got but it's fecking sweet.
|
Having trouble finding any of their albums to download. I would love a PM, want to hear more from these guys then the few songs on youtube.

Can't wait for the new album, Fluorescent Black, due out October 13 (it was September 9 initially but I just checked and it appears to have changed :( ). I heard a new track on ninjatune.net a while back and it was fantastic.
Oh look you can hear the track at Pitchfork -> link http://cdn.pitchfork.com/media/antipop_.jpg Why is Antipop hyphenated on the new cover? I hope that's not how it'll show up in the CDDB, creating a different artist entry in last.fm. |
That's awesome.. I had no idea they were coming out with a new album.
|
Thoughts on the new album, anyone? I've played it twice so far, I like it overall but have no concrete opinion yet.
|
I pretty much feel the same way, only picked it up a few days ago. The music is way more electronic based, but from what I've listened to so far the emceeing is stronger than ever. I really like it.. but I'm still not sure how it rates compared to Arrhythmia.. sounds more like Beans' solo album than anything Antipop have done.
I do know the first few seconds of the album completely threw me off.. I was wondering if I put in the right CD for a second. |

I don't know that I feel this one is more electronic than their others...do you mean less hip-hop (regarding the music of course)? Yeah I'll just have to revisit the older stuff and maybe then I'll notice. One thing is that I feel the beats and intricacies of the music could stand out more...it almost seems lost behind the vocals at times. Nothing "pops" out like I wish it would, and like I remember on Arrhythmia, but I'll just have to listen to that one again to be sure. I'm just thinking of the song "Ping Pong" which is really fun musically. |

Not sure which album I like better between Arrhythmia and Shopping Carts Crashing. I liked Tragic Epilogue and Fluorescent Black, but those two are the standout albums.
There's no video on youtube for it but check out the song Tilt off Shopping Carts Crashing. One of the best beats I've heard. |
I'm all about Ping Pong (The Return), Real is Surreal, Human Shield, Ghost Lawns, Lazarus Pit, Verses, Mechanic Robot, Timeless Void, Heatrays, and a few others. They have a lot of sold tracks, honestly. Ping Pong tops them all, though, in my opinion.
|
Fluorescent Black for me, but I have listened to that album much more than any of their others.
