Trying to get into rap

I don't like rap much (from what I've heard anyway) but I'm trying to give it a shot. What albums do you think I should I get?

Terrible Lizard 02-11-2009 05:09 PM

Check out DJ Shadow and try out alternative hip-hop first.
Later check NWA's Straight Outta Compton, always a good start.

Roemilca 02-11-2009 05:36 PM

Will Smith is catchy hip-hop/rap, check out Lost & Found.
RUN-D.M.C have fun, catchy old-school rap.

What kind of music do you like? There's a wide variety of hip-hop styles out there, knowing your preferences might help to narrow down some suggestions.

iksosept 02-11-2009 06:31 PM

I'd recommend Game Theory by the Roots, they do hip hop, but with :thumb: guitars in it :thumb:
+ it's a great record imo

check sis out:

it's a video combining three of their songs of the album
- in the music (my favorite on the album)
- here I come
- game theory

Surell 02-11-2009 08:58 PM

Good sire I do not require any fixings.

Aesop Rock's None Shall Pass is an extremely accessible hip hop album, try starting there.

I'm serious!

It's story time. So pull up a chair, and get your hands on some Atmosphere. Soo many albums I could name when you factor in the Sad Clown series, so I'll just throw out my favorite tracks:

God's Bathroom Floor
Modern Man's Hustle
Lovelife
My Songs
Between The Lines
Sunshine
Always Coming Back Home To You
Don't Ever ****ing Question That
Godlovesugly
Trying To Find A Balance
The Woman With The Tattooed Hands
That Night
Reflections
Yesterday
Painting
Saves The Day
Guns And Cigarettes
Scapegoat
Say Hey There
Your Glass House
Sound Is Vibration
Nothing But Sunshine
**** You Lucy

That's a good start.

karlito94 02-27-2009 05:09 PM

can anybody direct me to some "dark" rap? like **** about life being ****ty, real hardcore make you feel like you can do anything, shoot somebody down in the street for no reason rap?

edit: why the hell are their language censors on here?

Surell 02-27-2009 10:52 PM

Ice Cube. Duh.

The Prophet 02-28-2009 08:52 PM

To the opening poster, I recommend the following accessible, intelligent and catchy albums.

K'naan - The Dusty Foot Philosopher

Blackalicious - The Craft

Aesop Rock - None Shall Pass

CunninLynguists - A Piece of Strange

Dan le Sac vs. Scroobius Pip - Angles

All of the above albums are extremely intelligent, with amazing beats, lyrics and lacking the gangsta fixation of the mainstream bollocks.

As to looking for ugly, dark hip-hop, might I recommend:

Ill Bill - Black Metal

Immortal Technique - Revolutionary Volume 1 (or 2)

Hochii - Bullets Through the Speaker

BlueCadet 03-01-2009 09:09 PM

O.C.-Jewelz
Showbiz & A.G.-Runaway Slave
Big L-Lifestylez Ov Da Poor And Dangerous
Smif-N-Wessun-Dah Shinin'
Sean Price-Monkey Barz
Clipse-Hell hath No Fury
Madvillain-Madvillainy
Jay Z-Reasonable Doubt
Nas-Illmatic (and It was Written)
Raekwon-Only Built 4 Cuban Linx
Ghostface Killah-Ironman
Little Brother-The Minstrel Show
Gang Starr-Moment of Truth
J Dilla-Donuts
A Tribe Called Quest-Midnight Marauaders
Common-Resurrection
Dj Shadow-Entroducing
P.O.S.-never Better
King Gheedorah-Take Me To Your Leader
GZA-Liquid Swords
AZ-Doe or Die
Cunninlynguists-Will Rap For Food (or Southernunderground, its a toss-up)

Theres some lesser known albums that may be up your alley, I kept most of the more obvious essentials

Kirby 03-01-2009 09:13 PM

^ That P.O.S. album is amazing.

Also...

Anghellic by Tech N9ne.

All_Tomorrows_Parties 03-02-2009 05:57 PM

I'll second "Game Theory" by The Roots. I'm more of a rock person myself, so I can definitely say it's an album with appeal beyond rap fans.

I concur, I got a leaked copy a few days before it came out in stores and was totally blown away cause I had never heard of him before. I then promptly went out and got The Audition, another amazing album.

As far as albums to recommend I would recommend "Fight With Tools" by Flobots
It's hip hop with a violin, what more could you want?

Kirby 03-03-2009 04:21 PM

The Audition by P.O.S. is my favorite.
And I had Never Better on pre-order.
Refused to listen to the leaked copy. I wanted to hear MY copy.

The Prophet 03-06-2009 07:27 PM

I can relate to that.

P.O.S. really kicked my ass as well.

Highly addicted to K'naan - Troubador. I mean, just...wow.

Schredds 03-06-2009 08:14 PM

Jim Jones
Hell Rell
Belly
Nas (It Was Written, one of the best rap albums ever made IMO, good from front to back)
Young Jeezy
Too Short
The Game
Those artists are some of my favs. dont go looking for albums youll probably be dissapointed, alot of rap artists have some really good some but some really bad songs too, stick to finding songs you like, if your not a huge rap fan to begin with.

This one is also pretty good...

Mr Grieves 04-04-2009 02:03 PM

Well you might just not like rap. I was into rap when I was younger then I thought I had outgrown it, I became really into indie music but a guy who got me back into rap was MF DOOM. You should try his stuff or his side projects Madvillain or Victor Vaughn all are excellent and alot different than what you hear on the radio.

Surell 04-05-2009 12:14 AM

I just love AmeriKKKa's Most Wanted, I need to get the Predator soon. He's a hot rapper, no doubt.

My choices make it evident that I don't actually like rap.

Surell 04-05-2009 04:24 PM

I've heard good things about Ugly Duckling though, I actually have a CD here I still need to listen to.
