East Coast vs. West Coast

What is your take? Personally I am a fan of the Notorious B.I.G so... it's pretty obvious where my loyalties lie ;)

joyboyo53 03-03-2009 07:20 PM

south side bitch

edit - sorry, i thought someone else started this topic or i woulda left out the "bitch" part and elaborated more. i thought it was the same guy who started that thread to piss of the mods.

Janszoon 03-03-2009 07:31 PM

East Coast easily.

joyboyo53 03-03-2009 07:45 PM

From the east coast originally but I swear that's not why I voted east coast. There's just way more good hip-hop from the east, not to mention the fact that it started there.

someonecompletelyrandom 03-03-2009 08:18 PM

^Exactly. East coast is where it all began, West Coast can be fine but I think the West can be a bit unthankful to where it all started.

Surell 03-03-2009 09:01 PM

I'd say East.

LoathsomePete 03-04-2009 12:00 AM

The styles have become so blended that there really isn't much to differentiate them apart anymore.

That's true. But if you were to ask me to make a list of all my favorite hip-hop groups and rappers of all time, I bet about 75% would be from the east coast.

pourmeanother 03-04-2009 01:38 AM

I don't know, I guess I haven't paid that close attention to where the people I like are from. Actually most are Great Lakes/Midwest area. But out of the two, New York seals the deal. Love the good Doctor, and bay area is ridiculous/entertaining, but gotta go East Coast- but strictly in terms of hip hop music... everything else, West Coast Best Coast.

Dr_Rez 03-04-2009 02:02 AM

Why do we have to decide? I prefer listening to both.

someonecompletelyrandom 03-04-2009 10:06 AM

I listen to either as well.. but of the two I prefer east.

crash_override 03-04-2009 10:58 AM

Canada?

Surell 03-04-2009 09:25 PM

^ Hell naw.

crash_override 03-05-2009 11:50 AM

I would agree with your their, although the midwest has some pretty good groups, and the South has spawned two of my favourite groups, Rehab and CunninLynguists.

edit:

and to Surell Canada has produced some decent hip hop acts as of late, Buck 65, K'Naan (while from Somalia he moved to Canada at a youngish age), LuciDream (as well as Internal Affairs who later became LuciDream).

I'm not familiar with those groups but there are several southern states, like Georgia, that are also on the the east coast. So I consider their rappers east coast as well.

Rehab and CunninLynguists are two of my all time fav Hip Hop groups.

Rehab is from Georgia so I suppose you would consider them East Coast which is cool and totally makes sense. They unfortunately get slumped into with other rap rock bands like Limp Bizkit and Linkin Park so people who already have disdain for those groups often overlook them which is a shame. The vocals are what bring me home with this group, gritty, evocative, and heavy with depth.

CunninLynguists are arguably my favourite hip hop group at this present moment. From Kentucky this group came out around the '00's and lacked the gangsta fixation which was plaguing the airwaves at the time. Intelligent and witty lyrics riding on smooth and catchy beats, this group is totally deserving of their status in my books.

Kid Koala is great but he doesn't really have much to do with hip-hop.

Well, he is a turntablist, which is like the fourth pillar of hip hop, plus there's the whole Deltron 3030 collaboration, so I think it's safe to say he's got some experience in the field. I'll agree that some of his work really teeters on the edge of not being hip hop though.

Guitar may be one of the pillars of rock music but that doesn't mean all guitarists play rock.

East Coast vs. West Coast

I'd have to say it depends...I'm a huge fan of Biggie, Nas, Mos Def, ATCQ, De La Soul...who all rep the east, but I think 50 Cent sucks.

someonecompletelyrandom 04-01-2010 05:13 PM

As I am living in the South right now i'd like to say I support my scene. But there's just too much crap coming out of my area. I think I might like the Midwest much more now.

loveissucide 04-01-2010 05:17 PM

I think this is a fairly out-of-date discussion to have, considering the two scenes have simply become another two in a wider community following the rise of the South,Midwest and British scenes. The stylistic variations which defined the 90's generation of rappers are pretty much gone, and surely people have grown up a bit as regards the feud aspect.

Although to answer the question, East Coast purely on personal taste.

someonecompletelyrandom 04-01-2010 05:27 PM

Yeah, it is pointless to really take sides now, I meant more of that era.

overdoser 04-01-2010 11:45 PM

West Coast for life!!!

Kirby 04-02-2010 02:51 AM

Out of the two? East Coast.

My favorite section of the U.S.?
Mid-West.

Although, as said earlier, every section of the US has their redeeming qualities, and their not-so-good (a.k.a. ****ty) rappers/rap groups.
