Thoughts? Favourites? Anything missing? Provide youtube evidence please.

For me El-P is the most obvious omission, you can keep all that noisy off-tempo stuff this is my minimalist choice :p:
And personally I'd kick Kanye off the list and bring Madlib way up to the top 10. Not a big fan of good ol' G-funk these days either but Dre would probably have to stay at least top 20 simply because I couldn't think of any more producers, ha. Also I'd put Pete Rock below the Bomb Squad because jazz rap is already well represented. And where the f*ck is Eric B??

Anyway... sick 'em musicbanter!

Bane of your existence 05-01-2009 10:52 PM

Yeah, no Eric B is a big ommission. I'm a little suprised Dilla isn't higher. Not that I don't think you have it right, it's just that everyone's jumped on his dick since he died.
I'm not a Neptunes fan, so I gotta say that's awfully high.
I also think Swizz Beats is too low.
And no Ant? No love at all for him?
Emancipator would easily make it on my top fifty list, but I guess I could see him being left off a best fifty all time.
I would have put Boots somewhere on there, same with Timbaland.
Good list. I was just thinking of making one of these recently.

Edit: found Timbaland, I'm dumb.

Surell 05-01-2009 11:01 PM

Yeah, Swizz Beats can make some hot tracks.

Anyway, that list is pretty tight. Flash is wayy low which is weird since everyone loves him or soemthing.

BlueCadet 05-01-2009 11:49 PM

where's 9th Wonder?

simplephysics 05-02-2009 03:24 PM

Not including El-P on this list is downright criminal.

Molecules 05-02-2009 04:00 PM

yeah this guy has it a bit mixed up... El-P definitely belongs in the top 20 for being totally unique and progressive along with the handful of other more recent producers on here I am familiar with.

The top 10 seems to focus on the producers that laid the styles for the modern day which is maybe why Flash isn't there I'm guessing... again why Kanye West is there I do not know, his productions aren't exactly a revelation, whereas Timbaland changed things for better or worse.
Rick 'fat beard' Rubin is overrated too, the 'heavy metal/hip-hop fusion' thing being a novelty, so kick him right down the list. It's really interesting that Pete Rock is chosen for number two... I'd replace him with Prince Paul or Eric B :p:

sleepy jack 05-02-2009 10:00 PM

Dan the Automator at only 44? He deserves to be in the top 10 for Dr. Octagonecologyst and Deltron 3030 alone.

Freebase Dali 05-02-2009 10:26 PM

Tell ya what, you guys go ahead and re-arrange the list according to your own preferences, and it will be just as true as the list you found on about.com.

Bane of your existence 05-02-2009 10:35 PM

Ooooohhhh, I thought this was Molecules list. I don't read.

whoa... it never occurred to me that musical preference was subjective before ... guess this is no place for idle conjecture or banter on topics of a musical nature

Nah if I did it it would be truer.

Haha... Not when you bring a list from about.com, smart ass.

eh? so... because I sourced the thread topic from somewhere else it's automatically invalid for discussion? I've never read the MB rules but I doubt that's a clause. God this is boring. I don't suppose you listen to hip-hop Verdical?

edit: i agree with you about Dan the Automator btw Ethan, although he is responsible for stuff like this which would relegate him back to the second league for me

Naw actually I do. That's part of the reason I'm debating that list. I just figured you'd have enough of an "opinion", or whatever you kiddies call it now days, to make your own fucking list, buddy.

as previously stated I couldn't NAME 50 hip-hop producers if I tried, and since i've not come across a list of top producers either here or elsewhere on the web before I thought it would be a good springboard for conversation, buddy. As for my opinion, there's a few paragraphs-worth of it on the first page for your perusal.

I neither know nor care why you're such a belligerent individual, but if you're so concerned about the validity of this thread then either stop posting in it or approach a mod to delete it; either way you've derailed it with you're nonsense. If it's a credibility thing, by all means post your top producers and show THEM how much more well-informed your opinions are, because I am gawn

Sorry about that man, I was on the bitter end of a bad night and alcohol didn't help.
The thread threw me off a bit. Didn't see the point of it that I can now.

BTW, Apathy needs to be in the top 10.

Surell 05-05-2009 09:48 PM

Oh I bet you were.

IamAlejo 05-05-2009 11:04 PM

Being from the beach I love the Neptunes, but it's comical to have J Dilla below them. Also, no 9th Wonder nor Black Milk makes this list pretty horrible, along with some other omissions.

djchameleon 05-06-2009 05:19 AM

Imo, Scott Storch, Swizz Beatz and Jam Master Jay are waaaay too low on that list.

Bane of your existence 05-06-2009 04:03 PM

Nujabes should be on there

Sneer 05-06-2009 04:14 PM

Yep, no El-P is just nonsensical.

simplephysics 05-07-2009 05:37 AM

He should be in the top 10 at LEAST.

There is 0.0% chance that El-P should be in the top 10 of any all-time producers list. He's good, but not near top 10.

Bane of your existence 05-14-2009 11:59 PM

50 - The LOX

23 - Chyskillz
22 – Jam Master Jay
21 - LES
20 - Beatminerz
19 - Nujabes
18 – DJ Quick
17 – Large Professor
16 – Prince Paul
15 – Marley Marl
14 – Swizz Beatz
13 - Havoc
12 - Dr. Dre
11 – El- P
10 – Madlib
09 – Black Milk
08 – J Dilla
07- RZA
06- Emancipator
05- Ant
04- Blockhead
03 - Bonobo
02 - DJ Premier
01 – Pete Rock

IamAlejo 05-15-2009 02:30 PM

Bonobo at 3? Blockhead at 4? lmfao that is a horrible list. After the first two [and I'd put Preme at the top] your list went downhill in a gigantic ****storm.

1.DJ Premier
2. Pete Rock
3. RZA
4. J Dilla
5. Dr. Dre
6. Prince Paul
7. Marley Marl
8. Large Professor
9. Easy Mo Bee
10. Kanye West
11. Erick Sermon
12. DJ Jazzy Jeff
13. Rick Rubin
14. ?uestlove
15. Ali Shaheed Mohammad
16. Just Blaze
17. Diamond D
18. DJ Muggz
19. Timbaland
20. Madlib
21. Buckwild
22. Dan The Automator
23. Hi Tek
24. Q-Tip
25. Warren G

That's not even including production teams such as organized noise, DJ Paul and Juicy J, neptunes, etc. The fact people want El-P top 10 is mind blowing to me. The list above mine is painful to see.

simplephysics 05-15-2009 02:50 PM

His list looks fine to me. You even listed some of the same producers.

IamAlejo 05-15-2009 03:13 PM

He has people top 5 that shouldn't be in the top 50. That's a pretty big difference. And no offense, but you said El-P should "AT LEAST" be top 10, so I'm assuming you two have the same line of thinking.

Bonobo and Blockhead are fantastic, and yeah, since this is a favorites list they are pretty much exactly where they need to be.
But the guy that has Warren G, Ali Shaheed Mohammad, and
Just Blaze ahead of producers like Black Milk, Ant, Havoc, Swizz Beats, El-P, and Emancipator shits on my list? 'The fuck outta here homie.

It's not a Favorite, it's a top 50 list. Read the title.

And Black Milk will easily be top 15 or higher by the time he's done, but right now you can't put him that high. And I'll gladly put those 3's titles against the one's you listed. Putting Blockhead who is basically known solely for working with Aesop as top 5 is a joke. You're an idiot who knows nothing.

Haha, yo what the **** do you think a "top 50" music list is? It's entirely subjective. It is a favorites list.

And do you not listen to Blockhead's solo jaunts? They're nothing short of amazing. Listen to his stuff from Insomniac Olympics.

And please do put heads like Just Blaze's work up against the one's I listed. Maybe his DMX work will carry him. Or those bombs he dropped on Jadakiss, Foxy Brown, and Mariah Carrey. He shines every once in a blue moon, and his stuff for Talib and Doom was good. But you've got this head as the 16th best producer of all time?? As far as Ali goes, he's just never been a favorite. I think his beats are boring and flat.

pourmeanother 05-15-2009 10:50 PM

The Neptunes make some mainstream listenable. They deserve to be listed. I'm kinda on Pharrell's jock for no apparent reason though... Clever as hell. I even like him as an MC- crazy?

Fruitonica 05-16-2009 12:26 AM

Hmm, I don't really follow who produces what that often so my list is pretty much limited to producers who are very prominent. But it reads something like..

1. EL-P
2. Madlib
3. RZA
4. Alias
5. Dangermouse

IamAlejo 05-16-2009 10:44 AM

Haha, you're pretty salty about this, huh?
I'm blocked from youtube so I can't reciprocate.
I know I could up some of the great beats I've always associated with JB though.

Not salty at all, I said I'd put it up against who you had and did. You obviously can't from the youtube perspective [what'd you do to have youtube bloc you?]. If you're gonna argue you should back it up, which I did. Just Blaze has done some top-notch work. Finding that stuff was maybe 3-5 minutes. Easy. And I'll hold to the point that the guys you mentioned can't match it. Even Black Milk, who is probably my favorite producer out right now, can't.

I did search Blockhead's insomniac olympic stuff up, and while good it does nothing to have me put him in a top 20 or 30 list. But if you want to up some stuff I'm more than willing to listen.

Bane of your existence 05-16-2009 05:24 PM

I didn't do anything, I'm on a military network that blocked Youtube.
I really do wish I could join though, cause you're actually saying Just Blaze's stuff is better than a Bonobo or Black Milk, I just don't see it. Even his Jay-Z work wasn't that great. What are you defining as "great" production? It seems like it's quantity over quality with your list, and I'm just going by what I know of who you put. Not much groundbreaking and nothing really proggressive. It's all fairly stagnent, straight-forward bass high-hat beats. But they're famous and catchy.

Although I did forget about ?love when I was making my list, so props on that.

Gotcha. Black Milk will easily be on there by the time he's done, but he hasn't put out enough yet. Just Blaze's stuff is better than Bonobo from everything I've heard. Him and West pretty much built up Roc-a-Fella for quite some time with the beats they were putting out. They were responsible for a huge movement in hip-hop. You can't say that for Bonobo. That's not even mentioning if Saigon continues to blow up, who is heavily due to Just Blaze's influence.
