Ah. I see. :)

I'm sure I'll come around one of these days, Janszoon.

It's okay. You're still the coolest either way. :p:

BTW, I meant the music of a song as opposed to the rapping, i.e. beats, melodies.

Yeah, I'm with you there. They were the first but it probably would have died there if not for the rest of those artists. I suppose De La Soul vs. ATCQ is more of a personal taste thing than any other argument, but I guess I'd say De La Soul has a bigger influence on rapping over all, from mainstream to alternative they influenced a lot, whereas ATCQ never really had an influence in mainstream and stuck with the laid back jazz hop and didn't branch out.

Separating hip hop based on underground and mainstream is one of the most pointless things ever.

Word, man. Both of them are some of my favorites, but De La Soul takes the cake for me. Who do you personally prefer?

Did you post a top list, homie?

music_phantom13 11-02-2009 10:01 PM

 Apparently I actually did not. So I'll get on that now.

1. A Tribe Called Quest
2. MF DOOM
3. Ludacris
4. Madlibs
5. Dalek
6. Aesop Rock
7. De La Soul
8. Snoop Dogg
9. The Roots
10. Lil' Wayne or Del tha Funkee Homosapien

Also really like Slick Rick, Dr. Dre, Rakim, Method Man... And I didn't bother putting anything else involving DOOM or Madlibs up there, but I honestly think all their projects and collaborations, etc. are some of the best hip-hop of the decade. Quasimoto, Madvillainy, DANGERDOOM, and so on; they are all great. But this whole thread has made me realize I don't listen to enough rap these days :(

Oh, and major points for the Mouse on the Keys thread. I didn't think anyone else on here had heard about them.

Jester 11-02-2009 10:26 PM

Oh yeah man, Mouse on the Keys are neato.

Pretty decent list, Aesop Rock is my favorite rapper. Really like MF DOOM, A Tribe Called Quest, De La Soul, and Del, too. (Del is underrated as fuck.)

The only ones on the list I don't think are fantastic are Snoop or Lil' Wayne. I don't think either are bad (Lil' Wayne gets way too much hate), but I dunno about a top 10. Not sure about The Roots or Dalek in a top 10 either... I dunno.

Madlib kind of gets me. Good beats and stuff, but I feel like he is overrated. Even though Jaylib, Madvillainy, and Quasimoto are some of my favorite things on Stones Throw.

Captain Awesome 11-04-2009 06:31 AM

Well there's the problem M.C. D You're not actually listening to rap music. If the lyrics mean nothing to you and you just want to hear catchy beats that you can dance to go buy a 50 cent instrumental album or something.

- Awesome out.
