Liquid Swords Vs. Only Built 4 Cuban Lynx.

I realise I spelt LINX wrong.

Anyway, It's Gza taking on Raekwon. IMO the best lyricists in Wu, their debut post-Clan solo albums are seen as high watermarks of 90's hiphop. One thing they have in common is the production talents of RZA, who does an amazing job on both, but which one do you prefer?

Personally, I prefer Liquid Swords. I love the crisp, clean beats on OB4CL, as well as Raekwons storytelling, but LS has this psychedelic, almost ethereal quality to its production that draws me in every time, I think as an album it tends to veer off down more interesting routes. Tough call though.

Liquid Swords, no question

I prefer Raekwon as a rapper, but Liquid Swords definitely has a better sound.

I like OB4CL pt 2 more then the original actually.

iangreer 07-19-2010 06:06 PM

Liquid Swords was definitely better IMO.

Liquid Swords is one of my favorite hip-hop albums so .. Liquid Swords. I like GZA as a rapper more than Raekwon and I love the extra dirty production style that RZA used on Liquid Swords - I think it's some of his best.

I've never heard Liquid Swords but if it has your stamp of approval I think I definitely need to check it out! :)

Yeah, I think you should try it for sure. There are several early Wu-Tang albums that I love and I would say that Liquid Swords is near the top if not my favorite. Gza is just so loveable.

The insert photo is something that I've considered using as my avatar ..

I think that Liquid Swords not only blows Cuban Linx out of the water, but is in the top 5 best hip hop albums Ive ever heard.

Pretty unanimous so far, Liquid Swords is without a doubt in my top 3, OB4CL would make my top 10-12 though. Maybe a better poll would have been Tical Vs OB4CL.

I voted Liquid Swords, but I might just prefer Ironman to both.

Yeah, it's interesting. And I also want to give a shout to Raekwon's album because I do think it's a very good / great album.

Since this thread made me contemplate the question I've been listening to LS over and over. And I've been thinking a lot about Tical too. I have always thought the Method Man album is just not mixed right (sorry RZA, I love the beats) -- it's just too muffled to allow MM to shine like he does, but it's still a gem.

I might even ask whether Tical or Liquid Swords is better.

Sneer 07-23-2010 10:35 AM

Aah I love the grainy, heavy beats on Tical, I think they suit his style perfectly. I wouldnt say Tical is as good as LS, but I definitely think it's on a par with OB4CL. To be honest any solo material released by a member of the Wu, with RZA's production, during the period of 94-96 is at worst decent.

I also love Tical and I think it could have been the best Wu-Tang album of all as Method Man has that irresistable baritone voice and several interesting styles. But the whole album just sounds kind of muddy (I have an original CD) and it ruins some of the songs a bit, I think. I'm going to listen to it again soon though.

This thread made me go back and check out Cuban Linx and it's not even as good as I remembered. So much BS material (skits?) break up the album poorly. And a lot of the songs are just not very strong. It's more like an OK album with a few excellent songs where everything clicked.

Goin with Liquid Swords as well... Started really listening to GZA after I was listening to Raekwon. I really like Raekwon and I think he is rugged but GZA is just so smart with the metaphors and things he says and just has that powerful voice. I haven't listened to OB4CL in awhile though and I just recently have been listening to a ton of Liquid Swords so that might sway my opinion a little bit. But period, Liquid Swords is one of my top 10 favorite rap CDs ever. Tical and OB4CL miss on a few songs for me, but pretty much everything on Liquid Swords hits.

Phantom Limb 12-09-2010 03:43 PM

Liquid Swords for sure.
I think that GZA is a slightly better rapper.

Cuban Revolution is far ahead of Linx imo. Liquid Swords is a monster though..
I'd have trouble deciding where I sit with those two.
