Rap = Hip-Hop ?
A lot of people make the distinction between rap and hip-hop as being two distinct genres. Some, like me, feel that the term "Rap" is outdated (or a verb) and that hip-hop encompasses the whole 9. What do you think, and if its the former, don't just post "Dr. Dre is rap and Jurassic 5 is Hip-hop" Lay down some criteria.
|
honestly I dont know. I always thought of rap to be a part of hip hop. Rap is the vocal/lyrical aspect, while hip hop incorporates all the MC, DJ, and production aspects. I wouldnt say its different genres or anything like that. My two cents.
|
I Agree. I hear people Say things like " I love hip-hop, but rap sucks" or vice-versa, and I'm always curious to know exactly what distinction they're making.
|
I think they blend but its the beat and/or the lyrics that makes the distinction in each song. Does that make sense?
|
for me:
rap is more focused around the mc and the lyrics hip-hop is focused around the dj and the beats if it makes me wanna dance then its hip hop if it makes me wanna shoot someone then its rap |
I`ve always assumed rapping was the name given to the vocals & hip hop was the style of music.

I sort of agree with fenixpunk on this one. what I think of as hip-hop is stuff like the beastie boys and rage against the machine--what I think of rap is stuff like tupac, eminem, and 50 cent. so yeah basically I consider hip-hop actual music and rap..... well not something you need talent for, pretty much anyone can do it. Of course you need talent to turn huge like tupac or eminem, as far as rap goes, I'd say those guys are (were in pac's case) talinted in what they do.
|
yeah.. hip hop is real music and rap is.. well crap. shooting people and stuff like feinxpunk said. worthless stuff kids dont need to know
|
i think i may be misunderstood, i prefer the more aggressive rap the majority of the time, clicks like hypnotize minds, dayton family, etc.
three six mafia is my favorite rap group. as far as rappers having less talent over hip-hop i dont agree with that at all, listen to Tommy Wright III or Lil Wyte, tons of talent there, and if anyone tried to actually rap at one point or another, youll find its not as easy as they make it look. Sure rhymes arent to complicated, but to make it flow and do it with style takes skill. |
I'm a fan of the 3-6- When the Smoke Clears, Choices THe Album, UNtouchables, CHpt 2, those were all good. They got rid of most of the guys with Untouchables, but you still got Crunchy Black, DJ Paul, Juicy J, and Lord Infamous. Man that album is hilarious. i get a kick outta that one. hella thug.
I remember hearing some smoke anthem from Dayton family about smoking Phillies. It was hilarious. |
you should look up lil wyte, hes on hypnotize minds - www.lil-wyte.net has a video and 2 songs on it. Dj Paul and Juicy J produce his stuff, so you know its down south gangsta style. Hes from Memphis also. Im not sayin hes the next eminem (cuz hes white and can flow) truth is he wont get the airplay that eminem gets because of the lyrical content but in my opinion he can flow better. Maybe cuz I like the memphis sound. The songs on that site are pretty hardcore gangsta, but hes got alot of songs about acid, and booze. (again like eminem, but not as comical). I like most of eminems stuff, and i think hes got alot of talent, the guy can flow, and hes pretty original and hes one hell of a freestyler (never heard lil wyte freestyle) which is hard as **** to do. But if you like 3-6 then ya, check this guy out, im tellin ya he can flow.

Rap to me is all the comercial stuff, Tupac, Snoopp etc. HipHop is the art form.
|
i like old rappers, like Lord Finesse and Grand Master Flash and the Beastie Boys, the innovators of rap and hip hop. i think rap and hip hop were at a time synonyms, but the current music scene has made a distinction. todays rappers are more about speed and beats, while hip hoppers are more about singing.
i may be stupid, so dont restrain from calling me that. |

Hip hop is the culture, rap is the music.

i agree with fenixpunk. it makes me wanna bust a cap in someone's ass it's rap, if i wanna chill with em' bitches and show off mah bling while shakin what mah mamma gave me, it's hip hop! |
They have thier differences.
You can't say Ciara or Mario is the same type of music as Tupac or Biggie. |
I consider Ciara and Mario to be Rn'B. Hip-hop is an art form and a musical genre. 3-6 Mafia is just as much hip-hop as Jurassic 5 is. Rap is a verb, an action, and arguably a lyrical style not a genre. Its like calling heavy metal screaming, and sure its characteristic of some of the genre, but is isn't an apt description of the genre as a whole. Hip-hop is musical, cultural, and political and encompasses a diverse array philosophy, style, and music that grew out of the collective psyche of the urban African American experience. Violence, anger, and all of the other characteristics that could be attributed to what we choose to separate from hip-hop and call rap are only one facet of that experience.

ooo mr big words with your big words like philosophy and psyche oooo
