In 2003, DJ Mitsu the Beats released his first, self-produced solo album New Awakening (Planetgroove), including fine cameos with artists from various places around the globe. The best comparison I can think of is Gang Starr. The beats are more complex, however, and the songs are less verse/chorus oriented in general. Noteworthy are his collaborations with East Asian rappers, as the tonal aspect of their language makes the vocals more engaging.
