Grieves

I love Together/Apart. Another great white rapper out of the Pacific Northwest.

Thoughts?

My thoughts are that everyone on rhymesayers are pretty mediocre. They're all so over-emotional with their hearts on their sleeves and this faux rebellion thing going on. They say things that sound deep and meaningful on the surface, but if you listen harder you're like "wait, this is just ****ty music". It's rap music for the "cool" white suburban kids. However, the production on their songs is usually pretty good.

As far as grieves goes, this song has a nice instrumental, but the lyrics don't appeal to me at all. The few other songs I've heard from him have been fairly bland as well. I probably won't try to listen to anything else by him.

I can definitely see this. I'm pretty new to hip-hop so I probably fall for the "cool white suburban kids" product easier than others. The first thing I hear in a rap song is the production, and that's probably why this one and the rest of the album stand out to me right away. Maybe it'll wear on me with repeated listens, perhaps not...

Ay phantom limb, you recognize any of those places? Where does that mutha****a live, shakopee? lol

NOT that this effects my viewpoint of him as a musician. I'm just curious because I've lived here for a while and don't recognize that **** all. Maybe its where the cool counter culture movement is starting and im just too lame to know about it.

Pacific Northwest. Grieves is from Seattle...

I really don't like that Grieves song. Phantom Limb's description seems pretty apt RE that guy.
As for Rhymesayers, here's another group from the PNW that the label promotes. This is some old stuff by some currently unhip hip-hoppers. Sorry to derail but hark Grayskul...

I like everyone in Oldominion over most of Rhymesayers. (Grayskul is part of the Oldominion crew. But Grayskul isn't really my favorite of them. I gotta say Sleep, Smoke, and Onry Ozzborn rank a little higher. Though Aesop Rock has two features with Grayskul and none with the others.

Thread officially derailed, and talking about Oldominion.

Grieves never really stuck with me. I've seen him live, too, but then again I was really there to see Aesop Rock.
