I Self Divine

His newest mixtape is decent, with some good stuff. He hasn't put the songs on youtube, and we can't stream soundcloud but it's available for free here:

Standout tracks:
2. Dream Crusher
9.Bastards of the party
4.Death in the air (for the dangerdoom sample)
11. Mecca

Let me know what you think.

His flow is really old school, but I think the beats were pretty neat.

I actually wasn't digging your suggestions very much (except for Bastards of the Party). My favourite tracks were Thingz and Had To Go Never Leave (both had really cool background vocal effects) and Zero to 5ive was really chill as well.

Funny how you've been bumping K-DOT so much lately and this guy sounds a lot like him. I didn't like the flow so much at the start of the album but it grew on me as the album went on. But yeah, overall, pretty dope album with great beats.

I liked it. Not blown away but I will give it another spin.

Hmm, I can hear the Kdot similarity a little. Kdot is very on point, this guy seems more like free flowing i guess?

He has been around since the early 90's. He's an artist my old uncle associates with "real hip hop" so I've tried to see why the older generation might care for him.

But yeah, I agree with you guys, not mesmerized by it.

why you gotta come at me

This is from some biography article

Quote:

I Self would test his writing and graffiti skills while rhyming in the confines of his home until 1985 when he was then ready to proclaim himself, "I AM" and emerge on the scene. I Self was only thirteen years old.
Quote:

In Minneapolis, after three years of many failed attempts at group projects, I Self Devine along with Truth Maze and Kool Akiem formed the Micranots. Spawned from the dissolved groups, Metro Unit and Mixed Breed, Micranots were born while I Self spent time in jail for a second time during 1991-1992. Micranots were established on the cultural relevance of artists like Public Enemy, KRS-ONE, and X-CLAN, while possessing the street edge of: Ice-Cube, NWA, Scarface and The Geto Boys.
Quote:

For the next two years, Micranots terrorized Minneapolis with energetic stage presence while recording two full-length cassettes: Hoods Pack The Jam and Catacomb Files.
I could probably find I Self Divine easily enough and ask dude

Jester 03-16-2012 03:09 AM

i'm not "coming at you," i'm just saying he's not some artist who's been putting out records or tracks since the 90's

maybe he's been doing his thing since the early 90's or whatever, but i don't think he has even one release from the early 90's... or, some shit in the late 90's yeah, like The Dynospectrum
