kool ad

anyone bother with the new tape?

I like it you gotta sift through a lot of nothing, some based music

"im super dave, square burgers, burger king, king of burgers"

I really like Kool AD's dumb/intelligent dichotomy. Too often it leans heavily toward the dumber, less inspired, hyper-reference, "based" side, but when he chooses to say stuff earnestly, it comes together like the middle of a venn diagram. It's honestly something refreshing to listen to.

Lyrically he has plenty to say:

Quote:

The reveal-er
handicap favors the dealer
the hand that feeds, favors the over eater
cops wanna kick you like a bill
to hand over your heater
schools demand over achievers
abandon the beliefs of their families
and leave them stranded
in bland soliloquies
with snitches who call would call their fam philistines
nigga please
funny
hella books on a college, u be killing trees
ends is the ends
but the means is still the means
and **** my jeans were probably made in the philippines
by a little kid who would kill to leave as ill as me
or some ****, man im dumb i dont read enough
some don't eat enough
food should be free whatsup
it used to be, when it was growing on the trees and stuff
Quote:

its nothing accidental
or impractical
creative improvisation
is still actual, factual
the mind is a training ground
the master will be the one stay the round
and stop when everyone plays around\
im feeling bigger than a sphinx be
you can bail me or link
depending on which continent your from
depending on which cultural database you subscribe to
I throw a half eaten mcdonalds container in the trash, im part of a cycle
im all of the micheals
so, you can move on with the rifle
customs doesn't like your tour beard
i was the scribe of these lyrics so excuse if they're not quite perfect

Das Racist and their parts have just kind of alienated me for what I've heard them praised for. They seem like if my white pretentious northern friend Neil were a rapper, which I very much disapprove of. I will listen soon though because dat ain't fair.

Sparky 03-06-2013 12:19 AM

it's very pretentious and very self absorbed,

hence it's more or less more rap music

Surell 03-06-2013 12:33 AM

:nono:

Sparky 03-06-2013 12:47 AM

what from their praise alienates you? just curious

Surell 03-06-2013 01:46 PM

I guess it's like the hyper-reference (as you mentioned), or the seeming snarkiness, or the fact that they got props for getting on a Ghostface track and saying "Queens boulevard/Kierkegaard," and so on. It's not really the praise, just the things I've heard about them and the little snippets I have heard. It seems like uber hipster rap, all dry and sardonic and a little condescending, which I guess people probably associate with OF and others so shucks.

your correct in every respect, even omitting the more party-bro ish aspects.

Still, I like the political and social messages delivered in a joking self-aware style and they never fall into the trappings of preaching. Their main producer mike finito has a early el-p-from-company flow grind with his beats that i like. I like the hipster rap that has roots in new york aesthetics as oppose to hipster rap from say...rhymesayers, which simply has no edge.

New York is a good hip hop city...

I'll try his new tape, it actually sounded kinda interesting from what I read, and he sounds more laid back than them other dudes in the group. I seem to hear less about him than himanshu, and if there's another person, them too.

Sparky 12-21-2013 02:30 PM

his new tape is pretty cool too

production from oh no, toro y moi, etc

Ill post some of the better tracks when they're on youtube but this one aint bad
