The Largest Vocabulary in Hip Hop

I could easily just post the results of this study that was done but I thought it would be interesting to see who other people thought would be at the top or even in the top five.

Which rappers do you think are the most lyrical and use the most combination of unique words in their lyrics?

Goofle 05-05-2014 06:57 AM

I have seen this and no surprise at all to see who tops the list. Quite a few surprises in there though.

djchameleon 05-05-2014 07:24 AM

Yeah, I forgot to mention that. If you already know it doesn't make sense to spoil it for the others until I do the reveal later on.

Few surprises in how low or how high on the scale they were?

Janszoon 05-05-2014 07:28 AM

Gift of Gab maybe? I think I've heard him mentioned as supposedly having the largest vocabulary in hip hop and I could definitely see that being the case.

Goofle 05-05-2014 07:30 AM

Yeah, rappers I expected to be higher placed than others, but weren't.

EL-P not being included is quite annoying. Unless I just missed him.

yeah it's kind of funny that ICP was included but not El-P.

There were only 85 artists used in this and only counted up til 2012.

Fucking small sample sizes, how do they work?

Lolwut? I love ICP, but they're borderline retarded.

Goofle 05-05-2014 09:36 AM

They didn't place particularly high though.

Haven't seen this yet but I have to assume Aesop's at the top right? I don't know what the study is based off but I can't think of anyone I've ever heard that would even come close to him for this. Guessing some others that I would think would be top 5 or at least close, maybe Kool Kieth, Blackalicious, (cuz he has alphabet aerobics lol), Outkast, perhaps... Wu Tang Clan if they count it because they have a bunch of fairly lyrical rappers writing together?

djchameleon 05-05-2014 05:27 PM

Yeah, I might as well toss up the articles and the graphs but you are pretty close there music_phantom.

The thing about the study is that he put in a few groups but also counted the words of wu's solo albums also.

There are quite a few two person groups near the top as well.

The Largest Vocabulary in Hip hop

Top Five:

Aesop Rock
Gza(solo albums)
Kool Keith
Cannibus
Cunninglyguinsts

At the link he breaks down how he counts unique words and based off of that it's easy to see why E40 is super high. He uses so much slang and makes up loads of words.

Blackalicious has a good vocab but I think Last Emperor is one of the most diverse and lyrical MCs of all time.

Than you got people like Immortal Technique, Greydon Square, Illogic, and Sage Francis.. I would love to see this study and how many amazing lyricists they leave out.
