Of course it's music. Like all music, some people like it, some don't.

And now i'm going to end this thread once and for all. Music is what happens when a noise evokes a feeling in an observer. If I hear a needle fall to the ground, and it makes me feel something, it is music. Therefore, all sound has the potential to become music, should it reach the ear of the proper listener. You claim that Rap makes you experience a feeling of disgust, correct? Well disgust is a perfectly valid feeling, and the fact that Rap evokes it is evidence that it does in fact affect you. Rap is a collection of sounds that makes certain people feel something, a phenomenon that you yourself have admitted to.

The people in this thread have already shown that by every existing definition of the term "Music", Rap is included. Even if you consider music to be limited simply to an "intentionally crafted" series of sounds, Rap fits. You claim that Rap Culture is destroying the youth of today, which is just as nonsensical as when people claimed that Rock 'n Roll was doing the same to earlier generations. By all reason and logic, you have been proven wrong, and yet you continue. The only possible motive you could have to remain is simply to bait people into arguing with you, which is known as "Trolling". Now if you'll excuse me, i'm going to go watch a cheesy horror movie.

The girl I mentioned yesterday was actually smiling at me and other girls that I met. It is just that you haven't met me in person. If we meet somewhere down the road, but didn't know I was Blanche Minim, you will probably like me. Lots of people like me and I am actually introverted in real life. My 4th grade teacher told my parents that I was a great essay writer, back then that I might be a journalist, but I was broken up in my teenagehood and so is my writing grammar.

If you sense rage in my writing, even though I am not intending to, THEN THAT'S A GOOD THING!

I would rather listen to music that hypes you up and gives you drive and passion, rather than listening to rap, where you feel like Western Civilization has degenerated in the 21st century.

Rap and Mainstream music should not be the sound of the 21st century.

I was wondering why everyone is calling me a troll so I looked the word up.

Definition of Troll (based on the internet):

A person who, on a message forum of some type, attacks and flames other members of the forum for any of a number of reasons such as rank, previous disagreements, sex, status, ect.
A troll usually flames threads without staying on topic, unlike a "Flamer" who flames a thread because he/she disagrees with the content of the thread.

I don't remember attacking anyone. I was the one getting attacked originally.

I can't figure out how rap hypes you up, or gives you drive and passion. I had progressive rock in mind. Try listening to the song Mirrors and then Obsfucation - Between the Buried and Me, the first two tracks of the album The Great Misdirect

i don't honestly understand how people get hyped up over death metal but i don't go into the metal section and tell everyone how much i dislike their **** for 20 pages. you don't get anything out of rap cause you don't have an ear for it i guess, or you haven't made the effort to try to get into it. either way just make that effort or don't listen to it and move on. there's really nothing else to be said.

I have disliked Rap for pretty much my entire life, especially a large majority of the Rap being produced today. I've just never been a fan. But how ignorant of a person do you have to be to truly be convinced that Rap isn't music because to you, the 'rapping' is just yapping? Buddy, I am not wanting to be dick here, but you sound ridiculous.

Rap is music. Nothing you say, claim, will change that.

Now I feel like a dick for insisting that 4'33' isn't music. A number of people see it as music, so I'm probably wrong. Maybe silence just isn't my thing.

Rap hypes people up, as well giving them drive and passion. Rap inspires people, and helps them to carry on through the days of their lives, in the same way that Rock inspires you. If you wouldn't want someone to belittle the importance of Rock, then why would you try to belittle the importance of Rap? It's incredibly hypocritical.

And please stop talking about how Rap "degenerates the masses". The truth is that Rap is incredibly popular and influential, and at the same time violent crime is actually on the decline in America. You claim that Rap promotes bad habits and lifestyle choices, which is exactly what people said about early Rock 'n Roll, a genre that is actually named after a slang term for sex, and is filled with songs about sex, drugs, and fast living. But did Rock 'n Roll destroy the masses? No, it didn't, and neither has Rap. Now stop being such a close-minded hypocrite and find something else to take out your frustrations on.

Well, it is all just an opinion. Fact of the matter is that when there is melody, instrumentation of any kind, vocals of any kind, that's music. Silence being music? Haha, well...not much I can say on that.

Anyway, the OP of this thread and his opinion that Rap isn't music speaks volumes on how little he knows about the musical world, the guy should probably do some learning before he comes to a place like this, and says things like...well, this thread.

I'm surprised you have an '80s or 70's rock band as your avatar and you like rap. I look and dress like a prep, but I listen to the kind of music as if I wear a black shirt of my favorite bands and I have long hair.

Additional Information: I have no tattoos, I don't drink alcohol, I don't smoke, and I don't do drugs, I have no earrings, and I am not into jewelry (I use my cellphone as my watch). I don't care about the content of the music, what I care about is a song with a strong melody. At least the death metal bands I listen to scream most of the time and playing heavy chords, but it leads to something melodic.

Rap has no melody and I don't spend time listening to that genre.

Lol - no it's not. It's not a name of a band or a name of an artist. I am crazy about ear training, that's one clue I can give.

Nahh, someone might steal my idea. Oh, I get the gist of the sentence. I would rather make death metal, jazz, pop, and musical theatre lyrics than rap.

There was a poetic writing course I liked to take in my school, the problem is that it is in conflict with my mandatory courses.

You're a damn idiot. Rap has melody. The problem is you, not Rap. I don't get how people like you, can possibly even comprehend what music is when you can sit there and say Rap isn't music, I mean, my mind is baffled, I am baffled. If anything, what you're displaying here is just a blind hatred or an dislike of a genre of music you don't understand. Like I stated before. I do not like Rap, never have, most of the time I am annoyed by it. But I'm not ignorant, like you seem to be. So I don't go around degrading the genre, all the while attempting to come off like you even know what you're talking about, because you don't. You're contradicting things you say left and right, or someone comes along and gets you thinking, and so you back peddle in an attempt to save face. Perhaps you don't care how you sound, or you're just so up in the clouds with an ego problem that you don't even comprehend how you're coming across to us.

Here. I'll give you a chance to prove me wrong, or convince me that Rap isn't music. Go ahead...

What constitutes music? More specifically, and to the point, why is Rap considered music?

Firstly, I would like to provide why I think Rap isn’t music. It’s not convoluted; it’s pretty straight forward. When you are in a coffee house and there’s a guy on stage playing the bongos and another guy standing at the microphone reading poetry, is that considered music just because there are musical sounds accompanying it? No, of course not. So, at it’s best, my argument is that Rap is a crude, very crude, version of poetry. After all, the words, even if some of them are made-up, rhyme. And as a side note, yes, poetry should rhyme. If it doesn’t rhyme, it’s just story-telling.

So there it is. I just laid it all on the line right there. So someone could argue, if they wanted to, that Cake doesn’t make music, or at least, some of their songs aren’t music. For that matter, even Bloodhound Gang’s music shouldn’t be considered music since it’s simply talking accompanied by musical sounds. But still, I maintain that Rap is as much music as a chicken-fingers are actual fingers of chickens.

And as if calling Rap “music” wasn’t enough, they actually give out awards to Rappers. I heard last year they were going to have a new award to give out and it was going to be called “Most Incoherent, Vulgar, Mono-Toned, and Unoriginal Rambling Accompanied by a Video with Half-Naked Women Award”. The only problem was that they were having a hard time figuring out who to give the award to since it pretty much encompassed the entire field of Rap.

You've got to brush up on your 1960's, man! Anyway, what's with all of this "I'm such a good person! I don't do drugs! My fourth grade teacher really liked me!" junk you keep posting? You're not on trial here, so stop bringing in character witnesses.

Let me try explaining it to you like I would explain it to a caveman: Noises make people happy, noises are music. Rappers make noises, noises make people happy, Rap is music. Got it? And saying that all rappers do is talk into a microphone is like saying that all guitarists do is hit strings with their fingers. You're ignoring all of the beauty and detail that go into the art.

You know, sometimes I hope trolls aren't actually trolls, and that this guy really is this ignorant. That's why I keep posting in this thread, to see what other nonsense he'll come up with. See his reply to my last post? Pretty hilarious stuff. I guess music has to be comprised of actual instruments and the lyrics need to be sung to constitute music.

But, yeah...I think I'm going to bow out of this thread because it hurts my brain too much.
