Skits

What do you think of skits?
Do you enjoy them, find them humorous, think that they are a nice addition to the music? Or do they annoy you and lessen your enjoyment of an album?

I personaly strongly dislike them. Mostly it's just some stoned blabbering that might be funny coming from a friend at a party, but seems annoying and stupid on an album and even skits that actually are funny and cool loose their appeal after you've heard the album two or three times and you just wish the music would finally start again when they come. I always really enjoy albums where the artists didn't think they had to pad its length with skits.

Frownland 12-18-2014 12:23 PM

I agree, can't stand them. The latest Hail Mary Mallon has some obnoxious skits on it that I can't wait to skip. It's a shame because it's a fantastic album too.

WWWP 12-18-2014 01:17 PM

I dislike them when they show up in the middle of an album, generally speaking, but the first thing that came to mind was the opening track/skit of Liquid Swords which is ****ing rad. I guess it comes down to the momentum of the album for me, if the flow comes to an abrupt halt without good reason, i.e. an Eminem style skit, it's just annoying and really adds nothing positive to the listening experience. The same could be said for most filler tracks.

Could someone post an example?

Skits are rarely posted on youtube.

"Who Would You ****?" from Ghostface Killah's "Supreme Clientele", almost three minutes of yapping (my god, i sound like blanche), is a prime example, but it isn't on YT either. (Just the instrumental is uploaded, which has no annoying talking in it.)

Ok, I see. I have a sort of skit at the end of my first album. It's an exerpt from the Jabberwocky. People saying they hate 'skits' made me a bit apprehensive about it.

Actually, it fits in the context of what I had envisioned.

Something like that could be cool. I think that concept albums (bar hiphop releases) are pretty much in the clear, though I'm admittedly at a loss to provide examples of non hiphop skits.

Mm. Food is filled to the brim with skits, but I never think if those as filler or something to skip in fact I look forward to the series of segway track during the middle of the album, plus I love the long skit at the beginning of Beef Rap.

DeadChannel 12-18-2014 08:22 PM

Most of the time, they bother me, although they can be fun if sufficiently brief.
The whole"f*ck the king" thing on the new shellac album was fine, as it only lasted like 5 seconds.

I guess I'd be cooler with it if they were less of an afterthought, and actually funny or thought provoking or something.

Actually, ja I do tend to enjoy the DOOM skits. So I guess they're not all terrible.

WWWP 12-18-2014 09:46 PM

Yeah, I didn't even consider of the Doom skits, those seem essential.

Cuthbert 12-18-2014 10:21 PM

Thought this was the name of a new group.

I don't like them, never have done. I think the only album I like that does it well, is The Autobiography of Kirk Jones.

The worst ones are on The Chronic ($20 Sack Pyramid & Doctor's Office) and Ready to Die (can't remember name, same basic idea as Doctor's Office). Why would you even think it'd be a good idea to put this sort of stuff on your album

I hated that period in the late 90's/early 00's when everyone was at it.

Really depends on the skits content, length and position on the album.
Some short sample might be good at setting a specific mood and if it's at the end it's not as disruptive.

Doom skits are mostly great beats with some unobtrusive samples over them, so they are alright. Although I'm not a big fan of instrumentals and still would prefer them not to be there.

"$20 Sack Pyramid" is a great example. Almost three minutes of stupid, annoying ****.
How can anyone in his right mind think putting that on an album is a good idea.

Janszoon 12-19-2014 06:39 AM

I don't think I've ever heard an album that would would lose any quality at all if you removed the skits. At best they're non-essential interludes (i.e. DOOM and Madlib). At worst they're embarrassingly dumb and get more and more annoying the more times you listen to the album (i.e. virtually any 90s gangsta album).

It's at the end of the last song, and it does cap the album nicely.

grindy 12-19-2014 08:25 AM

Often rap skits remind me of those people who keep telling really long stories that would be supposedly funny if you knew the people and places they are about, but you don't, so they aren't, but they still keeps telling it, cracking up all the time, not noticing your annoyed and bored expression.

Cuthbert 12-19-2014 04:33 PM

The Roots have got a few skits that are decent.

Protect Ya Neck's is nice.

"I wanna hear that Wu Tang joint

Wu Tang again?

Yes again and again"

There's a few on Aquemini I don't mind but agree with Jans if you take em off you don't really miss much.

Skits have to be terribly creative or really add to the listening experience for me to even think of listening. Unless they add to a lot to the listening experience of an album that deserves to be listened through I delete them immediately off my library.

Frownland 01-04-2015 04:11 PM

The skit at the end of this makes me laugh every time.
