Lol Hopsin isn't really underground just because he isn't on the radio, I'd imagine dude has at least a million people that are fans/heard of him. He's definitely not under the radar.

i included him because Most people My age have no idea who he is.

I'd call them underground. The way it's used around here is anyone who doesn't get mainstream radio play.

To me underground is basically indie hiphop.

i've only heard a few macklemore tracks. i don't dig thrift shop, but his feature on cunninlynguist's close your eyes wasn't terrible, and he has another song or two with geologic which is kind of cool. not someone i'd go out of my way to listen to regularly though.

did he change his "style" dramatically to adhere to his growing fanbase or something since then for you to give him that "whack" label? i barely know anything about the guy.
