see you say they only get by on nostalgia but i actually wasn't around to experience them so i have no nostalgic memories of wu tang dr dre etc, i actually discovered them retroactively once my family got the luxury of the internet in my teen years.
i'm not 'lumping you in' with anything... just identifying a pattern |

The only thing I really criticize is the writing ability of mainstream artists, not their ability to put out good or catchy music. I said they get by on nostalgia for me, or at least a good portion of them. What makes someone a talented lyricist to you? |

to me, a talented lyricist is a rapper that draws attention towards the lyrics of the song. they might do this through doing some lyrical acrobatics, trying to make the rhymes as complex as possible or through punchlines and the kinds of hat tricks that a lot of underground rappers focus on but you can also be a talented lyricist by saying something real or something poetic. it doesn't have to be complicated, just evocative. telling stories is another way to be lyrical. i'd say i'll take the lyrics on this song over 99% of show-off underground guys like canibus throwing around a bunch of big words and pseudo-scientific bull**** but hey that's just me |
I like hip-hop, but there aren't that many albums which are fun enough for me to listen all the way through.
Usually there's a phase where I almost exclusively listen to hip-hop for 2-3 weeks, after which I don't at all, for several months. I have trouble understanding english lyrics, so I don't pay much attention to them. I enjoy a nice, intricate flow, the flow in old school stuff is mostly too straightforward for me. Most experimental hip-hop is kinda uninteresting flow-wise for me. I enjoy weird, experimental production, but a nice, groovy, sample-based beat is even more preferred. When listening to hip-hop in russian and german I mostly enjoy good, creative, funny punchlines in the lyrics. Storytelling and political messages don't really interest me, I mostly find that stuff a little corny, although there are exceptions. |
