Moor Mother

Moor Mother has been self-releasing albums since 2012, but came into full force with her first full length from Don Giovanni records, Fetish Bones. She has this great approach to noisy hip hop that's somewhat accessible while still being a demanding listen. It's an angry, distorted, complex, stream-of-consciousness riddled, masterpiece of an album that's getting way too little hype around here.

For fans of dalek, clipping., Matana Roberts, Sun Ra, Death Grips, and good music.

Fetish Bones is really something special and has become my album of the year after several listens.

Musically it's a no-brainer to love, but lyrically I love how she uses time travel as a way to express the stagnant nature of racism (and complement the futuristic sounds of the music). I thought that was really clever.

I'm such a stickler when it comes to hip hop so when she mixes it with noise and distortion which is another genre I love, it works. Definitely one of the cooler releases I've heard this year.

No but I'll certainly make a note of it.

Noisy hip hop is a wonderful thing, and dalek is the king of it.

Nice. I'm stoked to hear it then.

Yeah, I've listened to this about three times now over the past week, and each time it has gotten immensely better. Anybody who loves experimental hip-hop ala Death Grips, Dalek, or clipping but aren't into straight up worship of any of those acts, I highly recommend checking this out.

My favourite part of the album, aside from the remarkable lyricism is how the production can be genuinely grating and doesn't fall into the issue of being drowned out by their pop sensibility like I find clipping does.

Frownland 10-18-2016 04:12 PM

Is that what it is about clipping. that doesn't do it for me?

This does it for me like ****.

Ol’ Qwerty Bastard 10-18-2016 04:15 PM

I think so. I have friends who I know would never listen to experimental music but love a few clipping songs, so yeah.

Key 10-18-2016 04:24 PM

Might be my favorite track off Fetish Bones: https://moormothergoddess.bandcamp.c...adbeat-protest

It's so good!

Frownland 10-18-2016 04:56 PM

My favourite is the opener. It's the most abstract and it's the most powerful.

My one criticism of the album is that the closer, Time Float, sounds really out of place on the record.

OccultHawk 10-18-2016 07:47 PM

That's fantastic

My ears... ouch.

If your ears hurt from this, I'd hate to see what you'd think of full on harsh noise.

I don't really care for rapping unless it is accompanied by some kind of groovy beat which in turn accentuates and kinda creates a flow.
I guess I'm pretty conservative that way.
