well best way to hear music is to download it...get limewire coz its quickest n is easy to use.

in terms of ska, depends wot u want really...the best way to get into ska is to listen to the new stuff...
the best in my opinion are:
SUBLIME (although they are reggae not ska but they're amazing in every sense of the word) - the classic songs r "santeria", "smoke 2 joints", "40 oz to freedom" and "what i got" i guess.
catch 22 - "keasby nights" is a catchy song (haha wot a pun)
streetlight manifesto - well my fav off that album is "here's to life" although the whole album is absolutely spectacular
rx bandits - yyyeeeyyy am off to see them in 15 days :finger: :thumb: err listen to "lost", "Secret agent man (SAM)" or "progress" coz they're all great songs
Mad Caddies another great ska band...ummm "shut the door" is a good song, so is anything by them really just download wot u want
less than jake always good but uv probs heard loads by them anyway

lol hope that gives u some ideas

1st Sublime is not reggae, and barley contend as ska in alot of there songs.
2nd None of those other bands are ska either. They do not have any charecterisitcs remotley close to ska. Im not saying there band or anything. I rather enjoy most of them, but they belong in the punk forum not this one.

Anyway some stuff to listen to to get into ska I would pick

the skatalites
Desmond Dekker
Jakie Opel
hepcat
The Alpha Boys
Alton Ellis
The Toasters
The Slakers

Or you can go here http://www.ebreggae.com/Home.asp and pick up a trojan boxed set. These are garentted to give you lots of bang for your buck. Just simply pick the genre of intrest and purchase. They range from 3 cd's to 30 and from $17 to $120. Deffinetly a good place to start your ska education. There are also lots of informative websites. i can tell you more but i dont feel like typing now. But good luck and welcome to the world of ska. If you have any questions just write me and Ill do myt best to help.

1st, what i said was that the best way to get into ska music was to listen to some of the new stuff. i wasnt saying that older ska isnt ska, i just think newer music may appeal more to people who havnt heard any ska before.
2nd, i agree with you, bands like the skatalites, the toasters and hepcat are much closer to roots of ska music but catch 22 etc can still be classified as ska really. if your into classifying bands that is. to be honest i just listen to what i like to listen to and i find that this generally would be described as ska.

and none of the bands I mentioned are punk. theres bits of punk in some of them, but most people would probably say they were more ska than punk. anyway who cares, they sound good and I recommend them all. i think its the variation in the music that makes it so great :yeah:

ooo yeah and trojan sets are usually really good :D

All_Nite_Dinah 10-26-2004 06:34 AM

No acctualy they can't really be described as ska. There baisically up beat punk with horns. None of there rythm or guitar has any ska charecteristics at all. Unfortunetly your right, and it is most commonly described as ska but its more of a ska/punk then anything. Once again Im not saying there bad, because I like all those bands but fact is there not ska. And theres plenty of aactual new ska out there to. Check out Eastern Standard Time, King Django, The Slackers, 2 1/2 White Guys, Chris Murray, and lots more.

smoke2joints 10-29-2004 03:17 PM

i yeah a no, chris murray is great live, saw him last night. :thumb: the slackers are good too. il listen to the others cant say iv heard much by them as far as i know.

All_Nite_Dinah 12-04-2004 10:45 PM

They said they wanted to know what ska was though

Oi_To_The_World 12-05-2004 10:22 AM

^ smoke2joints mentioned some good bands (in particular, the mad caddies not so much the rest) but i dunno if theyre ska. but i can see where youre coming from.
from allnitedinah, i like hepcats, toasters, desmond dekker, slackers- those are good ska bands i agree. i dunno bout skatalites- dont like em too much.

of course im gonna mention (with no surprise) left over crack, against all authority, choking victim, no cash- just because i love ska/punk and these are all great for people who like either kind of music.

im gonna recommend some others: pietasters, voodoo glow skulls (spanish stuff is awesome), aquabats, antimaniax, op ivy.
