Just Discovered Reggae
Well i have just discovered reggae and all its glory. I just felt like listening to some bob marley, and i have always liked marley. but while i was listening to him, i looked him up on lastFM and seen some of his related artists and downloaded some burning spear, peter tosh, jimmy cliff, and augustus pablo. AMAZING. i have fell in love with this genre. its super relaxing and puts me at ease.
if anyone can suggest some of their favorite reggae artists, i would certainly appreciate it. |

Get a compilation of Toots and The Maytals and bathe in its glory.

I agree with the ones said, plus:
Easy Star All-Stars King Tubby Yellowman |

Also there are many sub genres of reggae which you may like even more. For example i am a big fan of rock-reggae (lately Matisyahu and Rebelution) Or maybe you like roots reggae...its up to you. |
Also try:
Misty In Roots. A particular fave of John Peel's. |
This is my fav reggae song YouTube - Black Uhuru - Thievery Corporation (Quality Beats)
I've been getting the box sets by Trojan with many different famous reggae artists. They are prob a good place to start looking. The Dub and Ganja reggae ones are dank. |

I would like to add U-Roy and Steel Pulse to jackhammer's list.
Also the Trojan box sets are an excellent place to start, and they're dead cheap. |
Its not reggae as such but you might like compliations by soul jazz records - 100% dynamite, 200% dynamite, 300% you see where im going with this . . .
Mix of Ska, Soul, Rocksteady, Funk and Dub and they are the best CDs i own! |

Jackhammer was clearly MB's reggae expert, but in his absence, and with a nine-year gap since he posted his extensive lists, perhaps there are some new recommendations to be made. |
Love this album. |
^ This album is so much better than I expected, Maajo; an excellent rec. :thumb:
I'm not a great fan of the insistant reggae beat, but these guys mix things up really well and keep the music interesting all the way. From now on, any time the conversation turns to reggae or dub, I'm gonna say, "Well, my favourite album is i & i survived", thus giving the false impression that I know what I'm talking about. ;) Thanks! |
Bad Brains is so great! Good work, Maajo :)

Ok so these are really obvious recommendations for anyone who know a bit about reggae music but if you don't know these records already please give them a try.
If you don't find anything you like here, i'd suggest you try another era of jamaican music, be it rocksteady (before reggae) or more recent stuff... Johnny Osbourne - Truths & Rights (try the title track and Jah Promise at least) Dennis Brown - Visions Max Romeo & The Upsetters - War Ina Babylon Junior Murvin - Police & Thieves Jackie Mittoo - Macka Fat (instrumental but so good you probably won't notice and enjoy it from the first second to the very last) Abyssinians - Satta Massa Gana (excellent from start to finish) The Gladiators - Proverbial Reggae (same thing) |
Third World's 96 Degrees In the Shade, Steel Pulse's True Democracy and Prince Far I's Heavy Manners are a few more classics, definitely favourites of mine anyway. Well worth a look if anyone's curious.

Our local community radio station has a weekly reggae show that might be a good place to hear stuff and get some ideas on what you like. The podcasts are available for 4 weeks from the date of broadcast, and are of course available to anyone anywhere with internet access.

Deadly Headley with Rico - 35 Years From Alpha
Smells a bit like Reggae but I'm not sure it belongs here. To my ears Headly is the least inspired on this track. Like too much recorded music today this has musicians located in totally different acoustics from each other. OK, I know I'm a fusspot about this kind of thing but - - - - - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4bSq...vUk_-n&index=1 |

Leaves me with two questions. What’s the difference between ‘roots’ and ‘reggae’, if there is any, and what is meant in so many reggae lyrics by ‘I and I’ ? |
