Bob Marley or Jimmy Cliff? (funk, reggae, genre, album)

yeah i have a lot of respect for bm cause of how mcu hhe have done for reggae he is basically "the face" of it
i ve never really listened to any other artists thouht:[

This is not a dichotomy. Jimmy's got contributions, Bob's got contributions. Jimmy's all "Many rivers to cross," and Bob's like "Steady Rock Easy". I'll break the rules and take both.

People like Jimmy Cliff & Peter Tosh get overlooked too much, Bob Marley's shadow is too big.

Bob for sure, Jimmy second. Peter had some great songs but he also had a lot of garbage. There are very, very few songs of Bobs that I don't care for.

were really not comparing the two most influential artists in reggae though. No disrespect to Bob, but he essentially made reggae popular, rather than pioneer the art. And Jimmy, well to me jimmy is kinda' soul music with a reggae inflection. A more apt comparison might be between King Tubby and Lee Perry or Toots Hibbard and Desmond Decker.

King Tubby and Lee perry pioneered Dub which is an instrument heavy remix style of reggae with lots of reverb and echo. Desmond Dekker and Toots Hibbard were the forerunners in the rocksteady sound of reggae which added a soul and funk edge but mainly soul. They were both making records a lot earlier than Marley.

I don't think the question was about who was first, it was who do you like more, Jimmy or Bob? Not Desmond or Lee or Tubby or Toots. Not who started reggae or who was the most influential to it. Just who do you like more, Jimmy or Bob?
