I never really got into Fu Manchu, but Kyuss is glorious, and Brant Bjork is an excellent drummer. Incidentally, my uncle is doing the cover art for ex-Fu and ex-Nebula player Ruben Romano's new project.

EDIT: Sh*t, I just looked at their MySpace and it's a whole f*cking lot bigger than I thought. And yeah, this reinforces the fact that stoner rock bands get around:

Ruben Romano (Nebula / Fu Manchu)
John Mcbain (Monster Magnet / Wellwater Conspiracy)
Scott Reeder (Kyuss / Across the River)
Isaiha Mitchell (Earthless)
Lorenzo Woodrose (Baby Woodrose / On Trial)
Jason Corbin (Bartenders Bible / The Casbah)
John Cobett (Hammers of Misfortune / Ludicra)
Jack Endino (Skin Yard / Earthworm)
Mr. Bernie Worell (Wizard of Woo & Woo Warriors / Funkadelic / Parliament)

I really like Nebula and Fu Manchu, so should I get into Kyuss?

California Crossing is as far as I go with Fu Manchu, and I love it. I need to listen to some of their other stuff.

good plan. start with the last 3 releasese

blues for the red sun
welcome to sky valley
...and the circus leaves town

wretch is passable i guess but i hardly ever listen to it compared to the other ones.

lucifer_sam 11-26-2008 04:28 PM

I listened to ...And the Circus Leaves Town about a week ago and I was really impressed. I can't believe I wrote that off as a poor album before. But yeah, those three are fantastic. The Kyuss/Queens split isn't too good though. =/

mr dave 11-26-2008 05:48 PM

yeah, the split ep is hit or miss.

some of it is really good though, fatso forgotso part 1, born to hula, spiders and vinegaroons make it worthwhile to me.

"Wretched" is very raw and thrashy, but there are moments in it that hint to future greatness. I'd say it's like witnessing the universe forming, so it does have it's historic importance if you dig "Blues" and "Sky". I don't have the love that everyone else has for "Circus" because it's completely devoid of the ground-breaking energy of the previous two classics, the vocals are for the most part buried in the mix, and it's way to mellow. But because of this, some stoners swear by it.
