Exactly.

Nick Mason for example is one of my favorite drummers, technically he's not great at all, my brother could play anything he can, however he's the best drummer Pink Floyd could ever have... Imagine if Neil Peart did the drum intro to Time instead, he would have made it much more technical, it would have sounded so overblown, it would throw the subtle magic of that song off center and ruin everything, it wouldn't be Pink Floyd.

I used to love Neil Peart, when I was a teen, trying to emulate him. The thing is, he hasn't evolved one iota in 30 years. It's intense intense intense with him. It gets tedious after a while.

I'll give credit where it's due...he's one of the best, technically, to ever play. But doing big rolls and making sure you hit every cymbal along the way while simultaneously beating the heck out of the foot bass is simply pretentious.

Just my opinion.

Well every band that thinks their albums are worth listening to are risking being pretentious in some way or another... I can't really think of a band or artist that hasn't done something pretentious... Art itself has always been pretentious, period... When you sell a painting of yours it means you have some kind of confidence for success or some sense of self worth that others might not be able to identify with, that would make you pretentious. IMO being pretentious can be a very good thing as long as we know they are being pretentious and just learn to appreciate the art anyway, as long as it's not "Dream Theater" pretentious or anything like that, it depends.

Well, I think it's pretty hard to evolve when you start out as good as Peart did - at least not without completely changing your style.

I think Peart is more than technicality - I think he also has a very good talent for composing drum lines and keeping it interesting - have you heard O Baterista?

But I see what you mean - he is very technical, and his style hasn't radically changed.

Ehhhh I've never heard Amery and Adler while he is good, I don't think he could be considered the greatest. I mean, he has some talented foot work probably the best I have heard and then his hand work is good too. But unless he could drop some latin and jazz beats down that sound good, I wouldn't consider him great. See the thing is, the faster you play, dosn't mean you are good. I've been drumming for 6 months, 2 monnths into drumming I made a short video, of basically nothing, just me playing "fast" (which by the way, isn't fast for me anymore) and people were like wow kid you're good. That's the problem, speed = nothing drumming is about sounding good while keeping a nice beat/tempo.

After listening to 'Rhythm Method', a ten minute drum solo during a Rush concert, and obviously being biased as I am a huge Rush fan, there's only one man for me ...Neil Peart!!!
