Well, my friend, I would say start with the big albums. Such as 2112, Hemispheres, A Farwell to Kings, and Permanent waves before getting into the obscure stuff. Those albums contan more of the straight up rock and probably feature some songs that you may already know, but listening to them thoroughly should leave you wanting more.

I like Jaki Liebezeit lots. Chris Cutler, John “Drumbo” French and Charles Hayward are pretty great too.

Joey is a good drummer. But! once you get past the whole omglolSlipknotlol hype, his hype, his drumkit and the same drumbeats he does, then it's just, 'oh okay another drummer part of a well-known band which automatically makes them omgsogood'.

This might sound a tad hypocritical considering the bands are well-known but my favourite drummers are: Gene Hoglan (Strapping Young Lad, Death, Dark Angel, Testament, Dethklok) and George Kollias (Nile). They're fast AND creative. They're good drummers because they're good at drumming, not because they're famous. =O

...*prepares for backlash from Slipknot fans*...baaahhhh....

chris adler or Nick McWells. Lamb of God and Droid drummers.
dave grohl is really good to. he laid all the tracks for tenacious d and the devil's drum solo in beelzeboss is badass. one of the best.
