no. they were not.

i'll fess up to owning both Pornograffiti and 3 Sides to Every Story at one point in the past. they were too clean, too proficient, and far too formulaic, to ever be truly funky.

their use of the term Funk revolved directly around the fact that they (or their management) didn't have the guts to use the term Fuck. Extreme was a funky as the Jonas Brothers are metal.

Well funk glam metal or whatever.

I will rephrase, I don't actually like them, but they are more talented and original than the majority of their peers and Nuno Bettencourt is probably the best of all those glam metal guitarists, at least he doesn't sound like he's just phoning it in.

I don't like Cherone's vocals though and he was a terrible choice for Van Halen, we can agree on that. I mean technically yeah he's better than David Lee Roth, maybe even better than Sammy. But Van Halen weren't a technical band really.

EVH was a super original guitarist for his time but by the early 90s he had a sh*tload of imitators and the band really lost their uniqueness once they went for a generic singer like Cherone.

That's a perfectly reasonable criticism.

But you can't say a band are terrible for not being sloppy enough can you? Well I guess you can.

I have to say that by calling a band decent doesn't mean I think they are really "good", I mean that they were competent at what they did. I consider Extreme to be one of the more tolerable bands of the whole 80s glam metal scene. And they had a really good guitarist as far as metal wankers go.

I agree.

If we all nod our heads maybe he will go away.

Extreme's peak was actually the early 90s. think about that. someone in a suit at a label decided these guys should go toe to toe with grunge.

and when it comes to funk you NEED to be a little sloppy, legitimately, it's where the funk flows through. you can't fake it. they might have been playing funky parts, but they weren't funk.

It's just that I do not like The Beatles at all.I can name tons of bands better than them.

So you don't like any music before 2010? Or is it just 00s and onwards you listen to? What do you think is "the past" exactly?

5 decades of music you're writing off because of ignorance - 50s 60s 70s 80s 90s. Unless you don't consider 90s the past.

Who are these better bands than The Beatles?

boo boo 06-14-2010 06:51 PM

I didn't say they were funk, I said they were funk metal. I guess that term is an oxymoron, as funk is supposed to be sloppy and metal is supposed to be clean, you can only be one of those things.

Well metal doesn't HAVE to be clean. But in the 80s and early 90s it did if you wanted anyone to take you seriously. Though I doubt a lot of people ever took this band seriously.

I'm hoping for names like Linkin Park to come out the hat. I'm a massive fan of The Beatles but I understand what it's like to not 'get' an untouchable band, so if other's don't get them or the band isn't their cup of tea then fine, but to say they "suck" is just laughable.

I hope he gets back with tons of better bands.

But Linkin Park are better than the Beatles... :shycouch:
