Well funk glam metal or whatever.
I will rephrase, I don't actually like them, but they are more talented and original than the majority of their peers and Nuno Bettencourt is probably the best of all those glam metal guitarists, at least he doesn't sound like he's just phoning it in.
I don't like Cherone's vocals though and he was a terrible choice for Van Halen, we can agree on that. I mean technically yeah he's better than David Lee Roth, maybe even better than Sammy. But Van Halen weren't a technical band really.
EVH was a super original guitarist for his time but by the early 90s he had a sh*tload of imitators and the band really lost their uniqueness once they went for a generic singer like Cherone.

i'll fess up to owning both Pornograffiti and 3 Sides to Every Story at one point in the past. they were too clean, too proficient, and far too formulaic, to ever be truly funky.
their use of the term Funk revolved directly around the fact that they (or their management) didn't have the guts to use the term Fuck. Extreme was a funky as the Jonas Brothers are metal.

That's a perfectly reasonable criticism.
But you can't say a band are terrible for not being sloppy enough can you? Well I guess you can.
I have to say that by calling a band decent doesn't mean I think they are really "good", I mean that they were competent at what they did. I consider Extreme to be one of the more tolerable bands of the whole 80s glam metal scene. And they had a really good guitarist as far as metal wankers go.
