I apparently needed links because initially every second post kept saying "back up what you're saying!!"

"by saying right or wrong these are my opinions and i`m sticking to them ?"

rofl, and you say I'm the one with no balls. You just don't get it; there is no opinion with fact, so I decided to, as you put it "teach everybody." It wasn't serious obviously, I just wanted to have some fun. Sue me mum.

I put a good four hours at least into that review and listed so many things that the general listener probably missed and I didn't say things like "oh that track is boring so I hate it!" No, I gave constructive criticism on each track and gave a detailed view on why or liked or hated a particular track. What the **** is wrong with DT fans??? This one experience has actually made me hate DT somewhat now, which seems a bit stupid maybe but I just can't stand **** like this. No wonder Portnoy wrote "Never Enough." I'm aware that there are people like this everywhere in the stupid world of today but the DT forum is definitely the number one den of culprits from what I've ever seen, and I've had to answer **** loads upon **** loads of angry emails and letters regarding my opinions but none even come close to the ignorance and immaturity that is DT fans.

Don't let this put you off DT, and there are loads of cool DT fans....like me!:p:
Your entitled to your own opinion, and I'm sure the majority of fans would accept that.
Btw, what exactly is the song "Never Enough" about?

Don 03-12-2006 05:04 AM

You're like the only cool DT fan I've ever met.

"Never Enough" is basically about MP being extremely annoyed with some fans wanting everything from him and the band. Have you checked out the lyrics?:

"Cut myself open wide
Reach inside
Help yourself
To all I have to give
And then you help yourself again
And then complain that
You didn't like the way
I put the knife in wrong
You didn't like the way
My blood spilled on your brand new floor

What would you say
If I walked away
Would you appreciate
But then it'd be too late
Because I can only take so much of your ungrateful ways
Everything is never enough

Sacrifice my life
Neglect my kids and wife
All for you to be happy
All those sleepless nights
And countless fights to give you more
And then you say how dare that
I didn't write you back
I must be too good for you
I only care about myself"

Yeah, I suppose Portnoy must feel pretty pressured.

Your a cool DT fan too and there are 4 DT fans I know where I live who are really nice.

Saying Voices is in 3/8 and 2/8 isn't an opinion, and it isn't even true. It's in 4/4 with accents, as was 6:00.

And you complain about layering, but really you can only layer things two ways: everyone comes in at once, or one or two people at a time. Those are the only ways; "gradually adding layers is a somewhat over-used musical technique and has thus lost its affect on the general listener;" that is one of the only two choices, so of course it's done often! Can you think of a way for everyone to be playing and they didn't come in one of those two ways?

Don 03-12-2006 08:23 PM

Gradual layering, which is what I've been quoted for, is your typical cliché layering where one instrument plays solo for four bars, then it's accompanied by another for four bars, and so on. Other layering is where more and more instruments (e.g orchestral) are adding to the harmony and whatnot at specific places and intervals throughout the track. Just listen to Angra or something, my uneducated lad.

Regarding Voices, skip to the 46th second and count that for me. You'll find it's in 4/8 then 5/8, or 9/8 if you like. In the DT forums, someone mixed up my "Voices" review with "The Silent Man" review.

And 6:00 is in 4/4 mostly yes, but it changes at the 30th second by going into 3/4 then goes back into 4/4 later.

Talon 03-13-2006 09:02 AM

3/4 and 4/4 are the most commonly used time signeratures ever. It's not strange at all. And that "Caught In a Web" part wasn't in "4/4 then a measure or 2/4." It's in (guess what?) 3/4 (or 6/8).

Don 03-14-2006 12:22 AM

When did I say it was strange? And okay count it ("Caught in a Web)" like you want, that's the way I count that part.

Talon 03-14-2006 03:19 PM

But saying "a measure of 4/4 then a measure of 2/4" is stupid. 3/4 is a commonly used time signerature.

And I checked that part of Voices, and guess what, TWO ENTIRE MEASURES OF 9/4. XD Damn that's annoying.

Don 03-14-2006 11:55 PM

Well, if you've ever written a composition before, you wouldn't think it was stupid; 2/4 amidst a 4/4 song is actually the most common change for me when I'm writing.
I count intro of "Caught in a Web" as 4/4 then 2/4 because I like my snares on the typical third beat. So if you count your beats twice as quick, you'll see that it's fits better than 3/4 because with 3/4 the snare is on each two which is a bit weird (or each three if you double the time).
And that part in Voices is in 9/8, not 9/4 (and there's a lot more than two measure of it), otherwise it would sure be a strange rhythm before it :P
