"Never Enough" is basically about MP being extremely annoyed with some fans wanting everything from him and the band. Saying Voices is in 3/8 and 2/8 isn't an opinion, and it isn't even true. It's in 4/4 with accents, as was 6:00.
And you complain about layering, but really you can only layer things two ways: everyone comes in at once, or one or two people at a time. Those are the only ways; "gradually adding layers is a somewhat over-used musical technique and has thus lost its affect on the general listener;" that is one of the only two choices, so of course it's done often! Can you think of a way for everyone to be playing and they didn't come in one of those two ways? |
Gradual layering, which is what I've been quoted for, is your typical cliché layering where one instrument plays solo for four bars, then it's accompanied by another for four bars, and so on. Other layering is where more and more instruments (e.g orchestral) are adding to the harmony and whatnot at specific places and intervals throughout the track. Just listen to Angra or something, my uneducated lad.
Regarding Voices, skip to the 46th second and count that for me. You'll find it's in 4/8 then 5/8, or 9/8 if you like. In the DT forums, someone mixed up my "Voices" review with "The Silent Man" review. And 6:00 is in 4/4 mostly yes, but it changes at the 30th second by going into 3/4 then goes back into 4/4 later. |
3/4 and 4/4 are the most commonly used time signeratures ever. It's not strange at all. And that "Caught In a Web" part wasn't in "4/4 then a measure or 2/4." It's in (guess what?) 3/4 (or 6/8).

But saying "a measure of 4/4 then a measure of 2/4" is stupid. 3/4 is a commonly used time signerature.
And I checked that part of Voices, and guess what, TWO ENTIRE MEASURES OF 9/4. XD Damn that's annoying. |
Well, if you've ever written a composition before, you wouldn't think it was stupid; 2/4 amidst a 4/4 song is actually the most common change for me when I'm writing.
I count intro of "Caught in a Web" as 4/4 then 2/4 because I like my snares on the typical third beat. So if you count your beats twice as quick, you'll see that it's fits better than 3/4 because with 3/4 the snare is on each two which is a bit weird (or each three if you double the time). And that part in Voices is in 9/8, not 9/4 (and there's a lot more than two measure of it), otherwise it would sure be a strange rhythm before it :P |
