Anything to do with Ihsahn, Bathory, Satyricon, and even though they think they are death metal, they more properly fit black metal= Opeth.

And then I realized... like I was shot... like I was shot with a diamond... a diamond bullet right through my forehead. And I thought: My God... the genius of that.

Argh, no one has mentioned the foundation of black metal from the North and South America.

Listen to:

Blasphemy
Sarco***o
Order from Chaos
Revenge
Black Witchery
Conqueror

Quality Black Metal in a style unique to the American continents. You don't know Black Metal unless you know these bands.

...and if one is feeling really adventurous, and one wants to know Aussie black metal:

Vomitor
Gospel of the Horns
Spear of Longinus
Destroyer 666

...and then there are the N.A. bands that pick up on the same vibe of early black metal bands, yet turn it into something else:

bludwulf
toxic holocaust

I quite like black metal! Furia, Nargaroth, Cor Scorpii, Irrwisch, Mgła, Kult of Azazel, Tsjuder (now Krypt), Gorgoroth (preferably with Pest on vocals), Azaghal, Mütiilation, Horna, Szron, and Arckanum are some of my favorites.

As far as black metal goes, I've always dug Dimmu Borgir and early Cradle of Filth. I've listen to a bit of Dark Funeral, Gorgoroth and 1349 and I like what I've heard so far. Another band that I've discovered recently is an American Black Metal band from Washington state: Wolves in the Throne Room. Really good stuff. Reminds me of some of the first BM I came into contact with, but I didn't have the ear for it at the time.

What I find interesting is how a couple of the earliest Black Metal bands: Burzum and Ulver have taken such a dramatic turn as far as their sound goes, and are delving more into slow, dirge-like ambient pieces, and even had some songs with elements of trip-hop and jazz involved.

I've been interested in checking out some Bathory. Anybody got any recommendations for albums?

I don't know if Opeth really belongs in the Black Metal category, although there are obvious Black Metal influences. But I appreciate the open-mindedness. A few people I know that are into Black Metal tend to write Opeth off as wannabes, pussies or sell-outs. **** that.

Ulver are most certainly not one of the earliest black metal bands. By the time their first album was released, there was a plethora of bands playing BM.

Their first album is the strongest - a strong punk influence is quite evident. They kept this spirit, to a lesser extent, all the way up the third album. After that, the musical quality went down hill rather quickly, as form replaced substance.

EDIT: The first 3 Bathory albums are, self titled, The Return, and Under the Sign of the Black Mark.

The critique I'd make of Opeth is their song writing; it's lacking. Their songs come off like a salad - a bunch of disparate parts lacking continuity and structure.

To disparage the very real and pertinent critiques of Opeth as simply being issued by close minded jocks does little to further the discussion of their music.

I'm not a big fan of black metal in general, but I do enjoy a few of the folkier/more ambient-like black metal bands:

Ulver
Negura Bunget
Agalloch
Finntroll
Drudkh
Empyrium
Limbonic Art

I like Hammerheart a lot. It isn't really black metal at all, but I think it is Bathory's best work.
