I've got Dirty, Jar Of Flies and S/T.

Gonna get Unplugged later. :D

I like Jar Of Flies, not listened to their S/T yet though.

mr dave 04-13-2010 12:33 AM

i always really liked 'the nothing song' from the S/T. it's the one about peanut butter on the brain haha

apparently they were having a hard time in the studio with that track. couldn't get the chorus right, people getting tired and pissed off, etc. apparently after a blowout around 7:30 Staley took a break and everything clicked while he was getting air (and presumably getting some peanut butter on haha)

Alice In Chains :)
Newer - Check My Brain and A Looking In View :)

I think they have a pretty unique sound, and its weird how its classed as grunge (same as Nirvana) and yet they both sound completely and utterly different.
Both both awesome :)

Yeah, "Nothing Song" is definitely one of those AIC tracks that you have to let go of all previous Chains expectations in order to get into it. Really ****in' whacked out. Kind of like the last track from the Sap EP, "Love Song" (some people know it as "Bleeding Gums"). "I love you. I'm not coming back, bitch. I can't see! I can't see!"

"Frogs" actually turned into one of my favorite late AIC songs after a long time of listening to them, where as when I was a kid, it was just one of those tracks that kind of got ignored. Kind of like "Head Creeps", which is also a really awesome song.

Pulsar 04-19-2010 02:45 PM

I really like "Heaven Beside You", "Grind" and the new "Check My Brain"

dtx21 04-19-2010 03:14 PM

Jar of Flies is a pretty cool album :D

That is the worst AiC song I've ever heard (though I haven't heard the new album except for a few songs). That song really turned me off from them after Dirt...to the point I didn't even check out the album it's from until last year. I was like, WTF is this shit?!

Aden 04-23-2010 01:49 PM

I'm fairly new to this band (I know... I was under a rock) but I'm totally loving Your Decision. Really fits with me right now.

scottsy 04-24-2010 09:56 PM

I still gotta get some more AIC into my collection... anyone got an upload handy??

Avenged Bullet 04-26-2010 04:32 PM

They're awesome in concert. I saw them the other night and while I knew it wouldve been better with Layne I was pleasantly surprised at how the new singer is live.

scottsy 04-28-2010 08:25 PM

That's good to hear... i am actually hearing nothing but positives about the rebooted version of the band.

MaraShylaStewart 04-28-2010 11:16 PM

Alice in Chains is an American rock band I love this band

scottsy 04-29-2010 08:50 PM

errrr, I hardly think their nationality was under debate...

jspaceman009 04-30-2010 04:59 AM

the recent batch of live shows (late 2009 thru 04/2010) have blended the "old" Alice In Chains songs with those from Black Gives Way To Blue. They're are almost seamless in respect to sound, emotion and quality.

William does a great job with the vocals and also plays guitar which gives them something extra that hte band did not have in the late 1980's thru early 1990's.

Loving the new disc, but the songs rock even harder live. I suggest to any fan here, find a few of the recent bootlegs from the North America Tour and you'll have some fun.

rage-x 04-30-2010 06:40 PM

i just recently got into them, it came up on my pandora play list and i thought they were pretty ba

scottsy 04-30-2010 11:12 PM

scottsy 05-01-2010 08:57 PM

hehehehehe... well if we never see him on here again, i guess we're gonna know why!

Silvergun Superman 05-01-2010 10:53 PM

Grew out of them a bit, but incredible band.

Jar of Flies is their unsung gem, imo.

snagglepuss 05-02-2010 08:18 PM

AIC is probably the best overall band to come out of the 90's. They didn't ascribe to the grunge ethos of "no solos". Jerry Cantrell is too good not to solo! Them Bones, Down In A Hole, Angry Chair are all great songs with lyrical guitar solos that are reminicent of Randy Rhoads and David Gilmour.

i never understood this supposed ethic. Kurt Cobain played plenty of solos on Nirvana tunes. Pearl Jam? Mike McCready is all over the place all the time. Soundgarden, Kim Thayil could noodle like no other - when it fit the song.

the angle was no superfluous solos, no soloing just for the sake of wanking on the guitar. make it tuneful and melodic, and most of them understood it. McCready could be guilty of hairing it up a bit on the early PJ discs though.

if anything it's Nu-Metal and it's offshoot of even crappier late 90s industrial pop that ascribed to the idea that guitar solos should never exist.

Kim Thayil of Soundgarden also did a lot of solos on their earlier albums too.

mr dave 05-06-2010 06:55 PM

^really? i've never heard that rumour and i inhaled any tidbit i could find out about Soundgarden back in the day.

what tracks in particular?

crushedblind 05-06-2010 08:38 PM

anybody surprised at seeing mike starr on celebrity rehab???

i had been operating under the assumption he had died of a drug overdose after he was kicked out

he's a total tool now

scottsy 05-12-2010 05:54 PM

My curiosity for the new AIC album is outpacing my bank account... would anyone care to throw me a sample upload??!! Pretty please??!!!

The Butcher 05-12-2010 06:30 PM

I have listened to some of their work. The lead singers voice is just too annoying for me to listen to more of their music.

CISElite 05-18-2010 10:18 PM

My favorite band of all time. Not the same without Layne now obviously, but new singer Duvall kicks plenty of ass, as does their new album.

Alex/ 06-03-2010 02:15 AM

Top-tier rock band, right here. Jerry Cantrell is a genius.

ChiliColdBlood 06-04-2010 01:29 PM

Anybody going to the BlackDiamondSkye tour? I can't wait.

SGR 06-06-2010 05:35 PM

Tripod is AIC's best album. That is all.:pimp:

90'sMusicKid 06-06-2010 07:46 PM

Ive been a huge Alice In Chains fan forever. ONE of my first albums was Dirt which I bought when I was around 13. I also recently bought their new album "Black Gives Way To Blue".

rammetal7 06-15-2010 10:51 AM

I hear some people call Alice In Chains a Sludge Metal band, do you disagree?

The only time I would really classify them as sludge metal would be during moments on their third cd. Especially during "Sludge Factory."

rammetal7 06-15-2010 05:58 PM

Alice In Chains is Grunge but I admit that they have Stoner and Sludge influences.

Saw these guys again on the Rock Werchter festival two weeks ago in Belgium. They blew me away again. What a power and so many great songs. You really have to dig the slow solid grooves but if you do it's absolutely amazing. They sounded very coherent and tight. One of the best performances of the weekend.

rushanroll 07-18-2010 06:09 PM

My fave album by them has to be Jar of Flies just because it shows there musical diversity. I mean they went country for Rotten Apple, I Stay Away, and No Excuses. Also, I adore the jazzy vibe on Swing on This

scottsy 07-20-2010 09:42 AM

I would always have considered AIC grunge, but definitely the heavier / more metal side of it.... I'm really not even sure what "sludge metal" is... attack of the genre titles again!

333 07-20-2010 09:45 AM

I guess Sludge Metal would be a cross between grunge and metal? Who knows. I get all kinds of mixed up with genres. Damn, scottsy, you're blowin' the sight up this morning.
