Please help me find similar artists, im trying to diversify :]

I love a lot of classic rock like Zeppelin, Floyd, Clapton, Vaughan but I have trouble finding current artists that are just as good. I'm a really big John Mayer fan; I think he's a really good guitarist and has amazing vocal range, and I like Jack Johnson, Spoon, groups like that. I don't like punk rock at all--I prefer more of a blues sound but it seems like the industry is saturated with the punk sound. I've tried getting into Indie bands like the walkmen, fiery furnaces, of montreal, the subways, etc I just can't get into 'em. Maybe you guys have some suggestions for the style I like, I really appreciate it :)

boo boo 06-03-2006 12:31 PM

Uriah Heep, Hawkwind, Gong, Tangerine Dream, Robin Trower, Roy Buchanan, Phish.

I also recomend My Morning Jacket.... And Secret Machines.

mosesandtherubberducky 06-03-2006 12:33 PM

The Fall of Troy
Death From Above 1979
The Arcade Fire
God Speed! You Black Emperor

I don't know if they are similar to what you like but they'll expand your taste

David 06-03-2006 12:44 PM

thanks brother :]

Thanks...This Uriah Heep group is pretty amazing. I definitely hear some Stevie Ray Vaughan influence in Robin Trower.

boo boo 06-03-2006 12:52 PM

Yeah, but Robin Trower has been in the buisiness much longer, he was an original member of Procol Harum.

explosions-in-my-pants 06-03-2006 12:54 PM

Sorry, it was directed at boo boo but it wouldn't let me edit my post to quote his post. Thanks Explosions, I'll check those out in a minute :]

explosions-in-my-pants 06-03-2006 01:11 PM

just wondering but do good lyrics mean alot to you? cause that may help when nameing bands for you to try out.

David 06-03-2006 01:14 PM

I'm more into the actual sound, particularly things that are upbeat. Good lyrics help though.

Ahh! good to know cause most of the msuic i listen to has more of a depressing/emotional/deepness to the lyircs. You said your a classic rock fan, umm Zeppelin Fan? cause a lot of Zeppelin's lyrics are about sad depressing love stuff.. I'm just trying to find bands more like them just newer cause those threee bands i said before have a bit of a rock sound yes.. but i'm not sure if you'd find them interesting or not.

David 06-03-2006 01:25 PM

lol okay I'll detract what I said because now I realize probably more than half of what I listen to is deep/emotional/dark. I like stuff thats really emotional (without the whiney annoying voice that punk rock singers have). Songs I like by Zeppelin are stairway to heaven (who doesn't like that song?) D'yer Ma'ker (really cool reggae sound) black dog, Kashmir (really creepy suspenseful beat) Dazed and Confused, etc

So with those songs by Zeppelin that you've said.. you pretty much like Metal/Rock N' Roll, and Blues-rock bands ?

i'm really trying to get the details before i find you crap.. hopefully if i can know the right answers i can find something worth listening to for you.

swim 06-03-2006 01:34 PM

You should listen to folk. Elliott Smith, Nick Drake, Bob Dylan, Pete Seeger and Woody Gunthrie are my recomendations.

explosions-in-my-pants 06-03-2006 01:35 PM

or what about the
shines and or
death cab for cutie
i'll even go as far to say
bright eyes
those bands are good..(even tho i don't like bright eyes)

Urban Hat€monger ? 06-03-2006 01:36 PM

Listen to some krautrock

Faust , Can , Neu maybe Kraftwerk if you`re feeling adventurous.

Also you might want to check out some Big Star , Pink Faires , Funkadelic as well

sleepy jack 06-03-2006 01:40 PM

I only read your first post and a few above me so I give you bands that have already been suggested sorry. You'd probaly like Rocky Votolato, Okkervil River, White Stripes, Wilco, and Sufjan Stevens. Also, do you like Rush?

David 06-03-2006 01:57 PM

Swimmingintheundertow - Not really a fan of folk, especially Bob Dylan :-/

Explosion - I don't like Death Cab and Bright Eyes but New Slang by The Shins is really good.. If you know of any other good songs by them to suggest, I'd much appreciate it.

Urban- I don't believe I've ever heard of those bands and I can't seem to find them on Limewire.

Crowquill - I like the White Stripes and Raconteurs, Rush is good, Rocky Votolato is too boring and monotone for me though :-/ I'll check out the other bands you suggested though

Thanks everyone for your help

sleepy jack 06-03-2006 02:02 PM

If you like Rush, Check out Coheed and Cambria also listen to "F.C.P.R.E.M.I.X." by the fall of troy.

the title of this thread makes no sense... if you want to diversify surely you want artists that are different?

anyway..

Mogwai, 27, Kayo Dot... one rocky one bluesy and one avant guard.

this is true, but with music i find its better to take it in steps.. I wouldn't be able to jump from classic rock to pop punk without somethng in the middle leading me to it.

Actually, i'd say Kraftwerk are much more accessible than Can.

Though that ain't saying too much... Trans-Europe Express is great to start with, then Autobahn if you have a thing for the incredibly weird.

boo boo 06-03-2006 02:56 PM

If you like prog AND pop.... Then Super Furry Animals is the band for you.

If you ever wondered what prog, metal, funk, bluegrass and polka would sound like if they were stuffed into a blender... Then check out Primus.
