You just answered your own question.

If groups give that image, what are people supposed to think.

Because they don't want to accept the bands true ideas. They just want someone to blame society's problems on. Metal and rap are blamed for the crimes. Although, in reality, it was someone that wanted attention, was crazy, or is at the end of their rope. And sometimes it is started by a corrupted official in office that's to blame.

Do they really know that though? You'd have to be a fairly big fan to realise that the band themselves are just ordinary people. Everyone else who hears the music can only judge the people in the band by the music.

A band puts out an album, it has blood and psychotic looking demons on the front, what do expect average joe to think of this band? Remembering that imagery speaks far louder then words (or in this case, lyrics).

Now you see why groups like ICP and Kiss had trouble.

ICP totally.

Kiss weren't too bad, they made fairly mainstream music. When people couldn't see the band they weren't scared away by the music, radio-play for example. And when they got used to the music, they didn't mind seeing the band.

Many would call ICP sick, long before hearing a song of theirs. The band members themselves don't have to be evil to make the band grossly so.

Exactly. So many call them weirdos and evil so they make it appear as if they are. People have to have an open mind to see the real people in the groups. They're just making a living and some spread a message as well.

People who think metal is evil, are evil.

Personally, I say that EVERY song has evil in it (even christian music). Without evil, there is no drama, no emotion. Of course, people believing that metal is evil to the point of avoiding it completely is downright pointless. Unless you have some sort of phobia of music, you listen to your favorite band, who more than likely has evil as an influence. Evil isn't the opposite form of music that is deemed okay, because there is no such barrier. Both 'good' and 'bad' are used in songwriting. Simply put, evil in a song, band, or music IS NOT a bad thing. That is my view.
