What makes a band unique?

Just wondering what you guys thought made a unique band? Is it the lyrics, guitar riffs, drum sequences, singer? Opinions are welcome.

boo boo 06-07-2006 06:54 PM

Every band has some unique quality that makes them different from all other bands, even the most unoriginal ones.

Juggalo4life88 06-07-2006 06:56 PM

Yeah, I know what you mean. But what draws in the fans? It has to be a quality of the band.

ZeppelinAir 06-07-2006 06:59 PM

the guitar and lyrics, the singers voice has to be decent, cant be sounding **** if you know what i mean

Rabid Sea Turtles 06-07-2006 07:03 PM

Juggalo4life88 06-07-2006 08:21 PM

Yeah, I know. I don't know why I didn't think to bring that up. Good thinking.

ZeppelinAir 06-07-2006 08:25 PM

Well, i don't consider technical skill to be too much of an important factor in quality, let alone uniqueness... It dosen't take skill to be unique, take The Shaggs for example, without a doubt the worst band of all time, horrible musicians, but they were still quite unique, no one sounds like them, in fact Frank Zappa (a technical genius, no doubt) was not only a fan but he also attempted to immitate their sound, however he could not, the music was simple but so out there and bizzare that their sound couldn't be copied.... Though that's probably a good thing. ;)

I'm nagging, back on topic, i think what constitutes good vocals/guitars/bass/drums/etc depends on the context of the song... For example, from a objective technical standpoint Tom Waits may be one of the worst singers in the world, but as far as i'm concerned he is one of the best.... Imagine if Steve Perry sang all the songs on Rain Dogs. O_O

I just scared myself.

I draw a line between technical and good, you can have one without the other... But of course both ain't bad either.

Juggalo4life88 06-07-2006 08:28 PM

I know what you are talking about.

What about Death From Above 1979? They have no guitar just bass and drums.

Or Sunn O)))? They have barely any lyrics (like 20 words for a whole CD).

Merzbow has no guitar (that I know of). And Les Claypool has some of the wierdest vocals and most consider them to be bad.

I think that unique-ness is based on how much the members in the band let their own personalities show though their playing.

boo boo 06-07-2006 08:39 PM

I like Claypools vocals, though few realise that they were inspired by one of The Residents.

Claypools vocals are different for sure but they have a ring to them. Them + his bass style=one of the closest things to perfection on earth.

Juggalo4life88 06-07-2006 08:44 PM

What about the Donnas? They are the female version of AC/DC. They're unique because of their sound. The old vintage electric with the girl's point of view.

bungalow 06-07-2006 08:45 PM

I tell you what doesn't make you original.
Dressing up like a clown, and rapping like an idiot about chopping people up with a hatchet.

Juggalo4life88 06-07-2006 08:56 PM

Check out Three Inches Of Blood's style of string picking. And then the lead singers voice.

Well, it would be original if a million people didn't do it.

But original dosen't always = good... And good is really subjective, i really don't think there is anything objective about good music at all.

Though originality is something i look for in a lot of bands, bands who lack originality can make up for it with creativity and songwriting.

Juggalo4life88 06-07-2006 09:02 PM

Exactly, painting faces shows creativity.........look at Kiss. It became a part of the great things about them beside their music.

bungalow 06-07-2006 09:03 PM

Face painting shows creativity?
Those preschoolers at the Fall Festival must be creative genuises then.

boo boo 06-07-2006 09:04 PM

Some bands use outlandish image or stage antics to cover up for lack of talent, though some bands just use it as a bonus for their fans, like Pink Floyd and David Bowie.

Juggalo4life88 06-07-2006 09:04 PM

Yes they are, bungalow. Just cause you're against it, doesn't mean a thing.

Laces Out Dan! 06-07-2006 09:04 PM

I think that there are a lot of guys who have unique voices for the fact that they're high...geddy Lee, cedric Bixler Zavala, and claudio sanchez

ZeppelinAir 06-07-2006 09:05 PM

the face paint makes groups stand out, they are different then the others, kiss they painted their faces(thank god)to hide them true selves from the world, and when they took it off, every one hated it

bungalow 06-07-2006 09:05 PM

Yeah, cause they were ugly.
Had nothing to do with them being unique.

No, KISS did it for publicity, and they got it.

Juggalo4life88 06-07-2006 09:10 PM

Exactly, that's another reason paint is good for some bands. It gives them publicity because most people look and it draws them in, whether it's to like them or hate them.

Merkaba 06-07-2006 09:15 PM

Everything makes a band unique, no two bands are the same.

Theres no one defining thing.

Yes, I'm a party pooper.

Uglycasanova 06-07-2006 09:38 PM

i hate band that have really unclear voices, how the heck do i sing along, perfect example

No, it only gave KISS publicity because the whole black and white face paint look was considered shocking at the time, few musicians did it (Alice Cooper and Peter Gabriel aside) and people thought it was cool, this was all before thousands of bands started doing the same thing.

Now when a band puts on face paint, no one gives a sh*t.

Juggalo4life88 06-07-2006 09:58 PM

True.

mosesandtherubberducky 06-07-2006 10:25 PM

^biggest waste of space ever.

bands=snowflakes

there now close this shizz before we get into a battle of the minds (or lack there of)

Frances 06-07-2006 10:51 PM

Someone's probably said this already but,

Q. What makes a band unique?

A. Being different to other bands.

Haha, kind of obvious isn't it?

TheBig3 06-07-2006 10:51 PM

Honestly, doing what you like, not what you think will sell records.

PerFeCTioNThrUSileNCe 06-07-2006 11:50 PM

^Unfortunately.....thats what quite a lot of bands are doing these days.
